Linda of Merritt Island FL writes (8/29/02):
Contracted with World Transport Logistics to transport my 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis from New Jersey to Florida. Price quoted was $595.00 for door to door pickup & delivery. $150.00 deposit at time of making arrangements was paid by credit card with balance to be paid in cash at time of delivery.

Car was to be delivered to Florida within 7 to 10 days from the date of picking up the vehicle. Car was picked up in New Jersey on 8/15/02. Car was not delivered to Florida until 8/28/02. Calls were placed to Yanticaw Trucking Corp. (973) 882-5576), the trucking company provided by World Transport, on a daily basis beginning on 8/23/02 as to when car would be arriving. Each time I was told that the car was on its way and would arrive sometime the week of 8/26. When I finally received a call that the trucker had arrived in Florida on 8/28/02 and would be delivering the car in about 1 hour, for the very first time I was informed that there was an additional $150.00 cash payment due for "overload of the vehicle".

At no time was I ever informed of any additional charge and had been told by Mr. Smale when the arrangements were made that the trunk of the car could be packed and articles placed in the back seat as long as they did not go above the back of the front seats. Not once despite my many phone calls did anyone ever inform me of this additional charge. I was not informed when the car was picked up in NJ nor when it arrived at the truckers dispatch center. If I had known about any possible surcharge, I would not have packed any boxes or luggage in the car.

The trucker refused to unload my car from the transport until this additional amount was paid in cash. He said that World Transport should never have told me that boxes and luggage could be placed in the vehicle. Although I called Mr. Smale at World Transport both before meeting the driver to get the car and while with the trucker trying to resolve this situation, all he could say was that "he was sorry" but in order for me to get my car I had to pay the extra fee.

He apologized for the way things had been handled but was not willing to do anything to rectify his mistake.

In addition, apparently due to the length of time my car was in transit, the car would not run when it was taken off the transport. Although it had been in perfect condition when it was picked up in NJ, it would not idle and would stall out when it was put in gear. Luckily it turned out to be a moisture problem in the gas tank which I was able to have taken care of when advised to try putting in a can of dry gas. This problem however resulted in additional time spent trying to get the car home and having it stall out whenever it was necessary to stop. If the car had been delivered during the time period agreed upon, this problem would not have been encountered.
