BMW cars have a well known defect in there transmissions and nothing is being done about it. The same problem with all of them. The reverse drum just breaks apart and therefore you have no reverse. It needs to be a recall on this problem. BMW needs to fess up by saying they produced a defective transmission and recall these things.

deborah of dumfries, VA June 18, 2009

Own BMW 323 transmission went at 70,000 miles. Cost over 5,000 dollars to fix. Started when I could not get the car in reverse. This is a defect in the car and needs to be recalled by BMW. Many other problems with this car. Windows breaking 350 electrical lights always going off. Senser breaking. I would never recommend BMW products to anyone. I tell everyone who will listen not to buy their cars.

I bought a 1999 323i convertible in Nashville and drove home to New Orleans. When I got home the trans would not shift into second gear without grinding, the sincrows were blown. Now I have to replace the trans. I have owned BMW's for many years and am disappointed that they don't address the trans problem in this fantastic car. Only 97,000 miles. Ya the cost to fix the car is more than what I paid for the car. Not able to handle this money problem at this time.

jocelyn of pasadena, CA June 11, 2009

I have purchased an 2002 BMW X5, April, 2008 from Assael BMW Mini of Monrovia. At the time of purchase, I was told and shown information to sustain that this was a certified pre-owned vehicle. There was a sticker on the window that had this information listed. I was told at the time of sale that I would be able to see the inspection check list, and recieve a Consumer Information Statement. After several phone calls, I was told that they could not locate this information. I called BMW of North America, they said they did not have any records of an inspection ever being done, only an enrollment date. The owners of the dealership at the time of purchase license was terminated 1 month prior of my purchase. I had purchased extra coverage for the engine and transmission at the time I had bought the vehicle. I noticed after really gettting the on the highway, it had several pre-existing problems. The transmission leaked, brakes were bad, controll arm bushings worn, service engine light came on and off, engine made whistle noise, and engine stalled. I took the vehicle back for service for these problems, dealer only fixed the obvious, which was the trans leak.

I had asked why they would not fix the other faults. They told me that these items were not covered under the CPO protection plan. I thought a CPO sale gave assurance that the vehicle is current on all safety and mechanical elements for the consumer. I have taken my car back 8 times for repair, and was told that they can not duplicate my concerns. Through this process I was yelled at by the Pre- Owned sale manager and told, "you keep comming back and the answer is still no, and now the warranty is expired, there is nothing we are going to do."

The last visit, I demanded that 2 mechanics take a ride with me to witness my problems. After the drive with them, they acknowledged my concerns that I had complained about initially. The service manager told me that because the warranties after a whole year of my attempts to have this car fixed were now expired and that I would have to pay to have my car fixed, because they have a hard time getting the warranty to repay them. I paid an extra 1500.00 on top of the pre-existing warranty, and they would not honor any of the two.

I am physically, and emotionally drained, lost days of work, paying on a car I can not drive, paying insurance on non-active vehicle, and paying money for other transportation. I have other issues with this car that I have researched. 1. contract was inconsistantly prepared. 2. Carfax indicated 1 owner, there are in fact severall other owners. 3. False advertising of vehicle being certified pre-owned. 4 Dealer failed to make qualifying repairs. 5. The selling of unsafe vehicle. 6. Was not given a warranty disclosure contract. 7. The instrument cluster was changed without my permission. I have forwarded all of this information to the maufacturer, BMW of North America, and have not been able to get any assistance with their reps.

Keith of swarthmore, PA May 29, 2009

My 2000 bmw 323 ci convertible lost reverse transmission with only 68,000 miles on the car, all my research indicates this is a common problem. BMW wants me to pay for half the repair cost.

joe of Waterbury, CT May 28, 2009

had my 2002 bmw x5 serviced by bmw since new. when it hit 75,000 miles the auto transmission went suddenly. replacement cost 6500. this should not happen. i keep hearing about others having same problem

Angel of Bridgeport, CT May 27, 2009

I purchased a certified used 2000 BMW 323i back 2002. My vehicle is in mint condition. The vehicle is up to date with the service requirements. I never drive the vehicle in the winter, it is garaged. Others have seen my vehicle on the street and can't believe it's 10 yrs old. I was driving my vehicle and simply made a full stop, shifted the vehicle to reverse. I then traveled approximately 15' when I heard a thump sound, I braked thinking maybe I ran over something. I looked around and didn't see anything.

I pressed the accelerator and the engine rev'ed but did not move. I shifted to drive and the vehicle moved forward. I braked and again shifted to reverse, the vehicle would not move. The following day I had the vehicle checked with my mechanic, he informed me that I needed a new transmission. He said the reverse gear was 'shot'. How could a high end vehicle like a BMW that never got mis-treated, always service and with ONLY 62,000 miles blow the transmission just by simply placing the vehicle in reverse and traveling about 7 mph. The vehicle has been in need of a new transmission for 2.5 months now. I will eventually fix/replace the transmission. Then I will sell the vehicle. I truly must say "I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANOTHER BMW". I always thought I person could not go wrong when purchasing a BMW, I WAS WRONG. Many unhappy BMW owners have experienced the problem with the transmission.

Many unhappy BMW owners have experience the small problem with the transmission. Now I must spend at least 4 to 5 thousand dollars to repair my vehicle.

Well I guess I can join the crowd. My daughter has a 2000 325 and at 75,000 and the tran. went. Then I found out they are mad by GM. Now I know why.
