I merely need to know if it is worth buying a 5 or 3 series bmw from 1999-2002, given the amount of steptronic transmission problems I have read about here. Did BMW change the ZF transmission in 2002 or 2003? When did they start using the 6-speed auto transmission. Which 90's years had the best tranny for the 5 and 3 series?

2000 BMW 323i Automatic with 70000 miles suddenly stopped engaging in reverse. Forward works fine but reverse does not function at all..seems like its in neutral. No signs whatsoever...just like that one fine morning. Showed it to the BMW Manhattan and they have quoted a price of 7000 to replace the transmission.

I have a 2000 white 323i wagon with the same problem lost reverse for no reason. The car was babied the whole time. No reason for the problem. I toke it to a trans shop and the the trans guy said the reverse clutch drum has a c clip that holds the clutches together under pressure. The clip breaks off of these in such a way that it cant be replace. The metal around the clip is weak. BMW said right away we can sell you the same new trans with the same defective parts. I found a guy that sold me a completely rebuilt trans for these with all upgraded parts heavy duty internal parts that wont have the same problem ever. I paid 3500 for the Trans and put it in myself. You can get the trans too at imcuban2@yahoo.com. They ship anywhere in the USA.

Got a 2000 BMW 740il. Same complain as the countless number of unsatisfied owners of 2000 models BMW, my car lost it's reverse. Engine runs fine but the reverse shift wouldn't engage. Foward shifts was working perfectly at first but then I droved it for a couple of days then all of the sudden the forward shifts wouldn't engage as well. My bimmer mileage is at 65,960 miles when it stopped working. My mechanic told me it needs a new transmission and that it will cost me around 5,000 - 6,000. This is very frustrating. Judging from the great number of people having the same transmission problem happening when their bimmer is between 60,000 - 75,000 miles there should be enough individual to file a class action suit versus BMW of North America (who chose to play dumb about the transmission problem of these cars). Count me in.

My 2000 BMW 323i transmission reverse gear failed at 114,000 miles. Judging from the myriad of complaints I'm a very lucky man as my failure occurred later than most others. I called BMW North America customer service at the advice of my local BMW dealer and place of purchase and was told like so many others, it is out of warranty and BMW cannot compensate me or assist with the repairs.
