I purchased a used 1994 740iL. The reverse gear had been replaced by a firm that specializes in transmissions in Seatac. This cost over 1000. Then I took it to the BMW Northwest dealer and had them go through the car. The evaluation and repair (over 1600 later) and I thought all was good. Within a few weeks, the transmission goes into Safe Mode and they tell me not to drive. After doing a lot of research, I think that the EGM module was defunct. BMW said that there was nothing wrong with the car.

I had a mechanic I trusted remove the module and sent it to a guy in Florida that rebuilds the unit. He tells me that when he opened it up, the motherboard was fried. The tech is in the process of getting a usable motherboard and rebuilding the module. He said that this should fix the problem. Evidentally, this is a common problem and hopefully this will fix it. Due to the rarity of the boards, it has taken 5 months to find one. Cost to rebuild is under 500.

Loss of funds and the car has sat idle for 5+ months. Had to purchase another vehicle to go to appointments. Battery went dead and I had to buy another one. It was about 100.

Just like the thousands of others complaining about transmission problems with all types of BMW's this is ridiculous. There needs to be someone with legal experience or someone this happened to as well that can point us in the direction of some sort of class action, a way to show BMW we will boycott them from now on , there is defiantly enough complaints to easily make an impact on the future purchasing of BMW's especially with the economy the way it is now.

Loss of my vehicle for extended period and costly to repair. Everything that comes along with that type unexpected expense.

I purchased a 2000 323i CPO from Chris Motors in Decatur in January 2001. The car has been nothing but TROUBLE since I drove off the lot with it. I have now replaced 6 or 7 window regulators, the sunroof, the radiator, a power steering leak and now I'm having the same issues as it seems a lot of other's are having...the car won't go into reverse. Oh and did I mention my car oNLY HAS 67,000 miles on it?? This is completely inexcusable for a car that costs as much money as a BMW does and supposedly prides itself on it's reputation as a luxury performance vehicle. What a joke.

I have spent untold hours (days) dealing with all of these problems as well as who knows how much money..I'm afraid to add it up.

Transmission Problems: Like many others have reported, my car will no longer go in reverse. I have a 2000 323i which I have owned for 8-1/2 years.

I brought the car to a transmission specialist and he estimated that to rebuild the transmission, it will cost between 4K-5K. I'm now debating over whether to buy a new car or get the repairs.
