Yolanda of Montgomery AL (12/25/07)
Reporting the failure of the transmission on my 2006 325i. My car had only 56,000 miles when the transmission began failing. The dealership stated that the transmission needed to be replaced and would cost me 8,500. I could not understand at first why a car with relatively low mileage and only 2 years old would need a new transmission, until I got on the computer and did some research. I did not know there were so many people having trouble with this. When I tried to approach the managers at the dealership of BMW of Montgomery, they basically told me that it was my responsibilty because the car was no longer under warranty. The dealership failed to tell me that these cars have so many problems with the transmissions. Something should be done to correct this problem during the manufacturing phase. Consumers that have had to pay out thousands of dollars for transmissions that are apparently faulty on BMW cars should also be compensated.

One of hundreds with the same problem - E46 with no reverse. Only answer from dealer is sorry, need a new transmission. BMW should help when they know they have a problem and ignore their customers.

My 2000 BMW 323I suddenly decides out of no where to not go in reverse. It is as if it is in neutral. I understand there are countless consumers with the same problem with this exact model with the Steptronic Transmission. My Beemer was running fine at 86,000 miles. Now it looks like it needs a new transmission.

Tracy of Lexington SC (12/19/07)
I have a 2000 BMW 323ci with 70K miles. This past weekend I backed out of the driveway and drove the car for a 100 miles or so. I parked it for a couple of hours; then drove it 200 yards, parked and turned it off briefly. When I returned, I started the car and put it into reverse and it rolled back a little because it was on a slight incline but when I tapped the gas it reved up like it was in neutral and would not go. After driving forward and then putting it into reverse again the same thing happend. I turned the car off and tried everything again. Nothing worked. I had the car towed to a local certified BMW repair center. They said the reverse drum had decentigrated and they could not repair it. The cost for them to put in a new transmission would be 5,100. After the shock, I went on line and came across this website. I could not believe the number of people having the same issue. The local BMW center was aware of the the transmission problems people were having but there is apparently no recall.
