Sure, they look tough. But underneath that brawny exterior, there are lots of delicate little parts. The most disastrous common problem is low oil pressure, leading to engine failure. Although this is happening like clockwork, DaimlerChrysler is refusing to accept responsibility.

Not only that, the Durango tends to go through ball joints like a dog through a pound of hamburger. This is not only expensive but can -- and does -- cause serious accidents, as many of our readers will tell you. The feds have finally put the arm on DaimlerChrysler to do a recall but there's some debate over whether the recall covers all of the affected models.

I have just purchased my 1999 Dodge Durango. I thought my only problems were minor, after reading up I find I was wrong. I have had problems that are exact to others. My driver's side rear power window quit working and luckily Dodge half way fixed it. My car creaks everytime I go over a hump, of course according to the dealer this is normal. Everytime I stop my check guages light comes on. Even though I have window washer fluid full my low wash light stays on. I am noticing noises increasing with everyday and did not realize the severity of what it could be. I have owned this vehicle two weeks and I had a Car Fax report that said no significant problems reported at this time. I need help I can not afford a problem that would cost close to a thousand dollars. On a smaller note my dealership lied about my financing. Has not done the all of the minor repairs I asked for them to do and they agreed to do before my purchase.

It seems we were going through a tank of gas every few days... we tested the mileage using the method recommended by fueleconomy.gov and it ranged from 10-16 mpg. The new vehicle sticker boasted 19-26 mpg, that's why we traded in our 2002 Ford Explorer that got 19mpg. We've brought it in to Dodgeland several times, they keep saying there is no way to test it and that their computer says everything is fine. We finally brought it to another dealer, Addy Dodge, who tested it and said it is getting 14-16mpg, but that they contacted Daimler Chrysler and they said this was acceptable. It is NOT acceptable for it to be getting so much less that what is stated, and it's MUCH lower than what the government's website says it should be getting!

It is costing us at least 150 more in gas per month, and a lot of high blood pressure every time I fill up with gas and calculate the gas mileage.

We were driving on the highway in our 1999 Durango, and all of a sudden our oil pressure dropped. We stopped off at a small gas station and let the vehicle sit, after 1 hour we started the vehicle up and drove 150 miles and never had a problem. We took the vehicle to Dodge, the Service manager advised us that they were going to replace the sending unit, that it was bad. 3 months later, we experienced the same problem again, this time they needed to keep it, they gave us a rental and worked on it trying to fix it for 3 days, when we went to pick it up, we were told that it would be in our best interest to trade it in and buy another vehicle. Suprise, we are upside down and cannot do it. We continued to drive the vehicle and didn't have any problems, we changed the oil every 1000 miles, and did several engine treatments. 2 years later, we are still having the problem, and now we are not even able to drive it 5 miles, without loosing oil pressure. We never missed an oil change, and we are now changing it more than needed.

Aug 8, 2006 Right front end ball joint separated while driving, luckily at slow speeds on a back road, on my 2000 Durango. It looked very rusty when we looked at it. A grease nipple would probably have helped prevent this!

My 2000 Dodge Durango experienced the same oil pressure problem. I changed the oil, it helped for two days until the engine seized. I am now on-line looking for a replacement engine. Dodge knows about this manufacturers defect, but blames it on lack of oil changes. Easy out for a sludge build-up that occurs whether the oil is changed or not !
