Firestone will for many years be known for its role in the infamous Ford Explorer/Firestone recall. While the recall has ended, consumers continue to experience tread separation problems with other Firestone tires, as the complaints in this section demonstrate. There's a completely different set of problems with Firestone Service Centers.
John of Howard, OH July 10, 2008
John of Howard OH (07/10/08) I took my 99 Buick Park Avenue into the Care center on 7/7/08 to have two new tires placed on the front end. The total cost, including balancing, value stems and old tire disposal amounted to 216.96. A lot of money but I was willing to pay the cost, however when I went to pick up the car on 7/9/08, the price had now jumped to 389.56. When I protested the cost, they said it needed brake rotors on both front wheels.
I knew nothing previously abut this, nor was ever consulted, did not give permission to do the work. They just did it and said I owed the money. As for replacing the front brakes, they had already done the work on 8/7/08 at a cost of 139.00. I feel they have ripped me off to the tune of 147.98 ( the additional amount they charged me the seecond time and want that mone refunded. John of Newbury Park, CA June 27, 2008
John of Newbury Park CA (06/27/08) In about 1998 I bought a used Lincoln Towncar with 4 almost new (judging by the amount of tread left on them) Firestone Tires ---50,000 miles on the car. I asked the seller if they'd had any problems with these tires? No they replied. I installed the popup covers for the air valve covers that would show me everyday if the tires were low on air. After using the tires for about 6 months, on the Perris Freeway 215 in Southern California driving at about 60 MPH, I heard a thud sound as I was driving. I pulled over to see that the right rear Firestone Tire with at least 60% of the tread left had blown out. The tread of the tire had separated and there was a pieace of loose tread about 2-3 feet long. This loose tread had slapped against the back bumper of the car and the rubber that is part of the bumper had been torn off.
Besides needing to buy ALL FOUR NEW TIRES because I didn't trust these Firestone Tires, I had to buy the rubber that is attached UNDER the bumper...which cost another 125. When I filed a claim with Firestone, Firestone blmeed me, after at their request I mailed them the busted tire, for underinflaction which they said they could prove because of the way the tire fell apart.
They did not offer me one dime in compensation either for the 4 tires I had to replace or for the 125 piece of rubber that the tires slapped against and tore off the car. This is the only tire I ever had blow out on me in about 40 years of driving except one time when I was a student in my 20's and I bought a pair of retreads because beging a student in those days 40 years ago I couldn't afford a new tire. But this blow out Firestone tire was a new tire---and it was not a retread!
Robert of Guilford, CT June 9, 2008
Robert of Guilford CT (06/09/08) We own a2002 Gulfstream Motorhome taht sits on 6 Firestone steeltex LT225/75R 16 Radials . Three of the Six tires have all experienced sidewall blowouts due to some type of sidewall problem were the tire separates around the name area on the tire untill the tire blowsout. The remender of the tires seem to be separated in the same spot
is there any way we may get some type of financial assisstance fro ford or firestone in relation to this problem. It appears that all 7 tires shoulkd be replaced (spare Inc.) tro have a safe tripto where we may travel and these types of tires run between 155.00 -200.00
Debbie of Dallas, TX November 13, 2007
Debbie of Dallas TX (11/13/07) July 14, 2007, we were traveling in our Fleetwood Motor Home east on I-40 in Arkansas. All of a sudden the motorhome began to violently vibrate, there was an intensified roaring sound, and the motor home was out of control shaking rapidly across the Interstate. Over a period between July 14 and July 23 we had four blow-outs from these tires: Firestone Steeltex Radial R4S Load Range E LT225/75R16. We are in possession of the tires and have photos. Firestone assigned an adjuster who wants possession of the tires, and we refuse to give the tires to Firestone.
All four passengers suffered trauma, cuts and bruises; the driver sustained dental injury. Pets were traumatized. The motor home sustained damage, our vacation was interrupted, we are out a considerable amount of money having to replace tires and for roadside service assistance, and the motor home was unavailable for us to use for several months after due to damage. James of Coatesville, PA September 22, 2007
James of Coatesville PA (09/22/07) After buying Firestone tires last year and only putting 7k on them the tread began to flake off the surface of tires. This created a road noise and vibration that is unacceptable. I have had to purchase new tires as they are unusable in current state. I have retained the tires as proof of flaw as well as photos of tread if needed.
