There are those who think airbags are the answer to auto safety ... and there are those who think they are dangerous missiles waiting to spring out and harm their users. Neither view is fully accurate but two things are for sure:

  1. airbags sometimes deploy when they shouldn't; and
  2. airbags sometimes don't deploy when they should.

Both of these conditions are highly dangerous and can result in fatal injury.

What can you do to protect yourself? The most important measure is to always wear your seat belt. Not wearing a seat belt drastically increases your chances of injury if you have an accident, whether your airbag deploys or not. Taking a defensive driving course would probably be No. 2 on our list.
