Gene of Orlando FL (11/29/04): My 1996 Ford Bronco caught fire as it was parked in front of my house. A neighbor called me at 2:24 AM to inform me that my truck was on fire. It had been parked for approximately 18 hours. The fire started in the engine compartment and appeared to have started on the driver side since the left side seemed to have endured the most intense heat.
The vehicle was a total loss. The economic loss was significant in that the vehicle, although having 93,000 miles, was in excellent condition. It had been meticulously maintained as I had no intentions of ever selling it. I purchased the vehicle because 1996 was the last year for the big Bronco and I really like that particular body style.
Lowell of Portland OR (7/23/03): I was the owner of a 1996 Ford Bronco which I purchased new. Since I only drive 4 miles a day to and from work it had only 39,000 miles on it. To compensate for all the stop & go driving I had the oil changed every 1500 to 2000 miles.
Konrad of Moore SC (10/27/03): My prized '94 Bronco went up in flames about 2 and a half hours after I got home from work. The fire started on the driver's side of the engine compartment, then made its way to the inside. This was a very nice truck that I spent a good deal of time and money on. I contacted Ford and they took all of the information. A week later I got a letter saying the truck was out of warranty and there's nothing they can do about it. This is not right!
I planed on keeping this truck for a long time and now it is totaled due to a machanical problem that the manufacturer will not acknowledge. My insurance did not cover fire damage. During my investagation I have found this is not an isolated incident. This has hapened to a lot of these trucks around the same year. What now?
On 7/11/2003 I had been parked in front of a friend's house for about 4 hours. A neighbor saw what he described as arc welding flashes comming from the engine compartment reflecting on the street. I did not know anything was amiss until we saw from the living room window the flashing lights of the fire truck which had been called. When I opened the front door I was horrified to see 2-ft flames coming out the left wheel well.
Needless to say my baby was a complete total. The entire front end, including the passenger compartment all the way to the front seat, was incinerated. The so called firewall simply melted. Fortunately no one was hurt but I have to wonder what would have happened if I had been driving or parked close to my garage or house.
