I lost # 3 cylinder when my spark plug blew out. I have not got my 01 expidition back form the ford dealer/repair shop yet so the result it yet to be seen. The extent of the damage is 456.00, To replace the plug the coil pack and the helicoil to try and save the head. I asked Ben, the service manager, if he thought I should have all the cylinders checked for the proper torques and he advised against it.

He said that if we go messing with things it could cause more harm than good. He also told me, as well as every other mechanic at that FORD authorized dealer/repair shop, that the 5.4L engines are NOTORIOUS for this problem. As a matter of fact when I drove the truck in they did not even have to go out to the truck to diagnose it. I complained of a possible blown exhaust manifold gasket. I left the truck running as I went to the desk and asked if they could hear the sound my truck was making. Ben and the other mechanic stated yes.

I asked if they thought it sounded like a blown exhaust manifold gasket they said it sounded more like a blown spark plug. The mechanic walked to my truck went right to the plug and grabbed a hand full of debris and handed it to me. It was what was left of the coil and the plug wire.

That is when he told me that 5.4L engines were NOTORIOUS for this problem. Later on the phone Ben also told me that he had personally fixed at least seven trucks with the same problem and had heard of alot more. I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER FORD. I have owned 2 ford taruses, a ford tempo, 2 ford escorts, a ford bronco, and now a ford expedition. Mark my word FORD, you won't find me Found On Road Dead again!

I own 2002 F-250, on September 28, 2007 while driving the #3 spark plug blew out stripping out the threads on spark plug and cylinder head. Ford said they could not anything about it. Ford has an engineering design flaw and they need to step up and take responsibility and resolve this issue.

Re 2001 Ford F150 Pickup Sparkplugs blew out and cylinder head gasket needed to be replaced. 18 hours of labor! I was told by my mechanic that this is a VERY common problem; Ford is aware of it but doesn't deem it recall worthy which it should be since it happens so often (but is a very expensive repair).
