Cathy of Wonder Lake, IL writes:

I purchased on June 9, 1998 a 1997 Ford F150. I was told it was a trade-in from a local, only one owner and it had 20,000 miles with the remainder of the 36,000/3-year warranty

The salesman said we would still have 15,000 or at least 1 to 1 1/2 years left on the original warranty.

April of 1999 the truck needed several repairs, gas gauge not registering, running lights don't work, driverside door lock broke automatic door lock broke, break peddle very soft ,back window leaking like a sieve, and when side windows are opened the back window area screams at a very high pitch and continues to get louder. The already repaired once when purchased side mirror still will only work intermittenly and a wobble feeling at times while driving but the air preasure in tires check out ok.

All items listed should be covered under the warranty and the truck only has 26,000 miles on it . I call in for the appointment they take the vin number and come back with the vehicle is out of warranty as of Dec. 9, 1998.

I said that can't be it's a 1997 with 26,000 he said yeah hold on. He came back and said the vehicle was built on Oct. 13,1995 and put into service date of 12/9/1995, so the vehicle is no longer under warranty.

I then contacted the salesman, and he said that can't be, he needed to check the papers . I called the next day he said that the information was correct and to make the appointment for repairs, the service dept. would contact Ford to see what they could do.

I said and if they won't do anything? He said that he would then have to talk to the dealership. I showed, the service dept. verified the vin#, said it is not under warranty that there was nothing they could do I said get the salesman, he came in, said and did nothing, I asked to speak to the owner.

They brought in the general manager that said basically there was nothing he could do that he would go broke if he fixed every vehicle that ran out of warranty and that I should have purchased an extended warranty.

I said that if my 1997 vehicle was on the road in 1995 which is unheard of anyway, I should have been informed that there was only 6 months left on the warranty. He said no not really and then he left. I then contacted my lawyer to see what if any options I had.

In the meantime I have been doing a lot of research. I have obtained from Carfax a history report that shows the vehicle was 1st titled/registered 9/3/96 as a corporate fleet vehicle in Dearborn, MI. It was then sold at auction to the dealership that I ended up purchasing it from as a locally owned vehicle used for trade-in from the one owner.

I have filed a formal complaint also with the Ford customer service dept. I have also since had my OD verified just in case this takes awhile and they try something with the mileage. At that time the mechanic said he has never seen anything like it. My sticker in the door says Oct. 95, the metal imprinting on the door frame says FORD 1996 and the EPA Sticker on the motor says 1997.

I have the car Johnny Cash sang about, "ONE PIECE AT A TIME".

My mechanic friend said they are hiding something don't keep it. I am exausted from trying to find a way to rectify what I see as complete fraud. This is not the vehicle I agreed to purchase and I am real angry that the manager of the dealership said that I didn't need to be informed. I have also found that the Buyer's Guide I have is not filled out the way the law regulates.

Cathy did the right thing in getting her attorney involved.  We are waiting to hear the outcome.
