Billing & Pricing
Inside Jiffy Lube

Dan of Iowa City, IA (07/25/06)
My wife took our van in to have an oil change. The usual price is 30. I gave her a coupon for 7 off. When she came back they'd charged us nearly 300 for additional services they'd convinced her we needed. It seems obvious that some Jiffy Lube employees deliberately prey on the unsuspecting public. That is what I'm convinced happened to my wife.

I believe I was ripped off by a salesman, not a mechanic. I went in for just for an oil change (I had recently had a 30,000 mile checkup by a mechanic) Signature Service 19.99.

What I got billed for was: T-Tech Transmission Service Engine Flush 49.99, Professional Engine Flush, HL4967 Oil Filter (again?), MV1030 PVC Valve 14.99, & Premix ASTM Virgin AFC for a whopping 194.96. They stated they added windshield washer fluid and radiator fluid to reservoir & radiator.

The first time I used my wipers the spray came out brown & stopped working. I had used the washer (before Jiffy Lube) and the spray came out clear. My commute to work is 6 miles and my car started overheating.  Now my radiator is cracked. It was not cracked before I brought it in to be serviced.

I brought this to their attention and they gave me some fast-talking jargon that I did not understand.  The economic damage to replace the radiator is between 280 & 700 through the dealership.

Currently both radio stations KFI 640AM and KABC 790AM in the Los Angeles aerea are carrying a commercial stating that a 10.00 reductuion on the price of an oil change will be given if the customer requests the price reduction and gives the name of the talk show host. I entered the Bellflower jiffy Lube location at about 1:30PM on Tuseday April 4, 2006, requested an oil change and gave the name of Al Rantell (host on KABC 790AM) and requested the 10.00 price reduction.

I was informed by the employee, (quote) "NOT THIS WEEK" I immediately left and had another local business do my oil change. In the past two days I have heard this price reduction promotion repeated several times on both KFI and KABC Is this not a violation of Truth in Advertising. or can it be considered Bait and Switch? I intend to follow up with a letter to The Better Business Bureau and State of California Automotive Repair Bureau.

Clay of Newport Beach, CA March 28, 2006

Clay of Newport Beach, CA (03/28/06)
I pulled into an empty Jiffy Lube for their advertised 19.99 oil change on my 1988 Toyota van. There appeared to be approximately 4 employees and one of them promptly told me they did not have a filter for my vehicle. I drove to the Toyota dealership, purchased a filter for 6.41 and returned to the Jiffy Lube location.  I asked them if they could now service my vehicle since I was providing the filter.

The serviceman promptly told me I would not receive a discount because the price was in the computer (?).  He then pulled my vehicle into a stall but did not know where the engine was nor how to get to it.   I had to raise the seat and show him.  Approximately 15 minutes later they pulled my vehicle out of the stall and told me they were finished. I asked the serviceman if they had checked all of the fluid levels and he assured me they had.

He began to prepare the bill and told me the total due was 22.86.  After speaking to another employee he told me I was receiving a 2.00 discount for the filter, making the total 20.86. When I returned to my office I looked at the bill and was surprised by several things I saw. First the gross sales was 21.93 and not the advertised 19.99. On the Service Checklist I noted all of the items they claim to have performed: Vacuum Floors (not so), Wash Exterior Windows (not so), Check Wiper Blades (not so as the driver's side blade is seperated from the rubber).

Since these highly visible items were not done, I am suspect as to the "hidden things" having been done such as the fluid levels, air pressure in tires etc. All in all I would say the service I received did not measure up to all of the signage in the store touting how important service is to Jiffy Lube.  This was not my first trip to this location, but it was the worst experience there and was an indication why this shop was empty.
