HJ of The Bronx writes: I financed a used 1995 Altima. My mother-in-law was in an accident with this vehicle and the police told me my car was stolen in Minnesota. The car was confiscated. The dealership registered this previously stolen car with the Dept. of Motor Vehicles. I contacted a lawyer and, without notice to me nor my lawyer, the dealership paid off the loan but has not compensated me with a car nor the money I had already paid towards this car. This happened on December 9, 1997 and while my family and I were held for over 4 hours in the police precint for questioning, the car was taken away and destroyed. Please bear in mind that this car was used by my family and the resulting destruction of the vehicle resulted in my wife, my mother-in-law and myself not being able to work the next day. I have had problems this past year with my lawyer trying to get them to honor their contract for a car. This has caused my emotional state of being to change to one of total disgust, frustration and total disappointment. I have lost approximately $3,000.00, that my lawyer tells me I cannot get back of my own money with payments, insurance and finance charges to a car that no longer exists. My name was put in TRW because the dealership had agreed to pay my previous lease off and the 1st payment to this car, which was a part of our contract, and they delayed the payments so that my credit is now tarnished. I have been on an endless roller coaster ride between the games the dealership is playing, my lawyer not helping me, and the inconvenience of using a small car between myself, my wife, and my mother-in-law. I have to sometimes walk or wait days until I can get a chance to use my mother-in-law's car. I feel cheated and I do not trust any New York
City official agency (Department of Motor Vehicles in particular as they never noted the
fact that the vehicle was stolen and went ahead and registered it without any comments or
notification) nor in the legal system. |
