Look out! The Mazda 626 and Protege are becoming notorious for disastrous transmission problems which the company steadfastly refuses to address. It appears the transmissions are made by Ford, a master at turning a blind eye to its defects.

Many Mazda owners with faulty transmission have asked about filing a class action suit against the company. Unfortunately, such suits are almost never successful. The auto manufacturer will spare no expense defending itself in court and it is seldom possible for consumers or their lawyers to match the company's resources. Best solution: consumers should sue the company in Small Claims Court. Their chances of winning are much higher and the cost of litigation is tiny.

Here are a few of the more recent complaints:

Richard of Ada OK (04/27/08)
Brought new a 2004 RX 8. The car continually would not start. We had it towed to the dealerships on 6 or 7 occasions. Finally they agreed to replace the engine. The engine was replaced and it still did not start. Each time they said it flooded and said flooding was our fault, even though we started it exactly how they told us to. We finally tratded it in at a hugh loss becuase it was such an unreliable car. It is by far, the worse car we ever had. Anyone who buys a 2004 RX8 is asking for trouble. I was told the latter versions also are problems.

I have a 1999 Mazda 626. The transmission just failed at 52,000 miles. My mechanic informed me told that usually one can purchase refurbished replacement transmissions with a 100,000 mile, 3 year warranty on them, however no one would take my transmission because they said that the Mazda transmissions are faulty and can't be repaired.

I understand the my 1998 Mazda 626 was equipewith a Ford built automatic transmission. I had to have it replaced by Tom Wood Mazda of Indianapolis. Luckily, my extended waranty paid the entire amount. My milage was 98,000 at that time. I now have 160,000 miles on my car and the trans seems to be slipping. The car is the best one I have ever owned except for the transmission, of course. I have had my car serviced per manufacturer's reccomendations. I have put a lot of preventative maintenence into my car - all done by the dealer - even all of my oil changes were done by the dealer. It is disappointing that such a good car should have a chronically defective Ford transmission. I will NEVER buy any Ford products, nor will I buy any other cars with Ford components.

The transmission failed in my Mazda 626 2001 and I had another transmission put in and it failed too. I am witing to find another one. The OD light flashed and the transmission went out both times. There was a TSB bulletin released on 5/21/2002 #05-005/02 re this problem with Mazda transmissions but never a recall. I saw numerous complaint and websites Re; this same problem. If I would have known I would have never bought the car.

Bought a used 2000 Mazda Millena / Great car - Transmission started to leak/ Mazda would not honor a 3000 mile warranty at 3100 miles- Transaxle seals were leaking/ Mazda wanted 3500 for a new transmission. I had the seals replaced and it lasted for a while. Now its slipping and leaking. I saw other letters on defective transmissions. Is Mazda doing anything about or am I stuck like everyone else?
