Look out! The Mazda 626 and Protege are becoming notorious for disastrous transmission problems which the company steadfastly refuses to address. It appears the transmissions are made by Ford, a master at turning a blind eye to its defects.

Many Mazda owners with faulty transmission have asked about filing a class action suit against the company. Unfortunately, such suits are almost never successful. The auto manufacturer will spare no expense defending itself in court and it is seldom possible for consumers or their lawyers to match the company's resources. Best solution: consumers should sue the company in Small Claims Court. Their chances of winning are much higher and the cost of litigation is tiny.

Here are a few of the more recent complaints:

I purchased my 2004 Mazda 3 October 29th 2004 as a leftover. It had 43 miles on it when I drove it off the lot. I had no problems what-so-ever until about 47k when my transmission failed!! This is an automatic that is driven with care and not abused. Luckily it was covered under Warranty. One month later- Transmission Failure- replaced again under warranty!! I am now at about 69,500 and my ENGINE SIEZED!!!!! This is NOT covered under Warranty and of course Mazda wont touch it. I now have to pay to replace an engine 100% out of pocket... Okay, I understand the Warranty thing, but a car should by no means have its transmission replaced twice and an engine replacement within 150k let alone under 70k.

We had a 2002 Mazda Tribute that caught on fire in our garage on 12/18/07. We woke up at 1 am b/c of the smell and found the SUV (that had been parked since 4 pm) was on fire. The house was completely destroyed. I writing this from a hotel room.

We lost our home and most of the contents - the firemen got a few things out - but we're not sure how much can be salvaged. We had 3 cats, 1 escaped but is burned and still at the vets, the other 2 perished in the fire. We lost the Mazda and our 2 car suffered paint damage and smells of smoke. My daughter had some minor problems with her eyelids due to the smoke. We lost so many things of sentimental value - it would be impossible to place a value on them.

Transmission for my Mazda 626 failed the 3rd time in 18 months! First time I Paid my Garage 1900 to fix it.. Second time, it was covered by the repair warranty.. In Just few months it failed again! Who should pay for the service this time again.. I had just found out on the Internet that I am not the only victim with this same issue, I hope all victim should file a class action law suit against Mazda to fix it for us under a new warranty.

This sports car has been a disappointment from day 1!!! I even wrote to Mazda expressing concerns for safety. Loss of power on accelerating can be dangerous when pulling out into traffic. This car has been back & forth to the dealer for manufacture recalls OVER THE LAST 3+ YRS. Recently (40,000 miles) there's been even more loss of power & roughness. Brought it in to the dealer... IT NEEDS A NEW MOTOR!!! I was shocked!!! TWO weeks later I drive out of the dealership, step on the gas... THE CAR IS BUCKING & THE CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON!!! THE CAR GOES BACK IN... IT NEEDS ANOTHER RE-BUILT MOTOR!!! I'M PAYING FOR A SPORTS CAR THAT'LL BE SITTING AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR A MONTH BEFORE THIS IS HOPEFULLY OVER!!! I WANT OUT OF THIS CAR... NOW!!!!

I have owned a Mazda 3 since May of 2005. I have the Mazda 3s, sometime ago my airbag light started coming on. It would be on for a few days and then go off again. I called and asked the dealer about it and they said that they could only diagnose it if the light was on, but assured me that it was nothing. Anyhow, 3 days ago I was involved in a roll over accident and not one of my airbags deployed. 90% of the reason that I purchased this car was because of the saftey features of the vehicle (i.e. Front and side impact air bags as well as curtain air bags).
