Look out! The Mazda 626 and Protege are becoming notorious for disastrous transmission problems which the company steadfastly refuses to address. It appears the transmissions are made by Ford, a master at turning a blind eye to its defects.

Many Mazda owners with faulty transmission have asked about filing a class action suit against the company. Unfortunately, such suits are almost never successful. The auto manufacturer will spare no expense defending itself in court and it is seldom possible for consumers or their lawyers to match the company's resources. Best solution: consumers should sue the company in Small Claims Court. Their chances of winning are much higher and the cost of litigation is tiny.

Here are a few of the more recent complaints:

the check engine light came on in my 2005 mazda tribute.the pcm (computer) was all caroaded and destroyed 6 ignition coils that had to be replaced. My tribute as less than 50.000 miles on it but mazda would not cover any of it because the 4year warrenty was up although there was a technical service bulletin about this proplem. so im not the only one with this problem. stay away from the 2005 mazdz tribute you,ll be sorry like me.

Carol of Reseda, CA March 24, 2009

Carol of Reseda CA (03/24/09)
I have had problems with my '05 rx8's in dash display for my audio. I have repeatedly reported it whenever I get my car serviced but has not shown it's problem whenever its in the dealer for service. The light (or backlight?) appears to be turned off in several occassions. I tried to figure out when it goes off (if it's too hot or too cold or if it has something to do with the time of day) so I can make a detailed complaint/report about it when I go have it in-serviced but I can't seem to figure out when it goes off until I finally gave up on it. I have also replaced the visor on the driver's side. The brakes has always been squeaky for some reason and I had one of the taillights flooded (good thing it was still under warranty). I love my car but hate the hassle of getting worried about it.

Since I cannot see the display on the screen, it gets me distracted and I have guess what button I should press for my radio or what type of air vent I already have (just for the face or also for the feet). It's so frustrating that I almost had an accident while playing with the buttons!

The transmission on my 2003 Mazda Tribute failed at 70,000 miles, warranty expired at 60,0000 miles. Airport Mazda (Pittsburgh PA) had the vehicle for a week, all they said was the computer did not register any codes. The following day brought it to a local transmission shop, during the mechanic test drive the car just stopped, the Mazda Tribute needed to be towed back to the shop. The transmission I understand is made by Ford.

2750.00 repair bill.

William of Beaverton, OR February 24, 2009

William of Beaverton OR (02/24/09)
I bought a new 1990 MPV van. When it reached 80k miles, the vehicle maximum speed was only 40MPH and the engine started to burn engine oil to dark. The computer diagnosis showed that the vehicle computer failed. I had to abandon this car as trash. I also bought a new 1999 626 LX car. Currently, its mileage is only 68510. Its transmission was broken. Both cars gave me a lot of trouble. I lost huge money from them for repairing. Why Mazda's vehicles quality are so bad? I will never buy Mazda cars and tell my story to anybody I know.

Zola of Durham, NC February 22, 2009

Zola of Durham NC (02/22/09)
I was driving home from work with my 3 year old son when I heard a big boom noise. My car started making a loud knocking noise. I was only a couple of blocks away from the house and had a van full of groceries. I got the van into my driveway. I looked under the hood and noticed that my spark plug had blown out again. This is the 2nd time this has happened. The first time I was on the highway transporting some children to a school event. It took about an hour to get someone to come and get the children and get my vehicle towed home.

My van is now parked in my driveway. I have had several mechanics look over the vehicle. They state that I am looking about a couple hundred dollars to repair the problem. Who has that kind of money with times like these
