Look out! The Mazda 626 and Protege are becoming notorious for disastrous transmission problems which the company steadfastly refuses to address. It appears the transmissions are made by Ford, a master at turning a blind eye to its defects.

Many Mazda owners with faulty transmission have asked about filing a class action suit against the company. Unfortunately, such suits are almost never successful. The auto manufacturer will spare no expense defending itself in court and it is seldom possible for consumers or their lawyers to match the company's resources. Best solution: consumers should sue the company in Small Claims Court. Their chances of winning are much higher and the cost of litigation is tiny.

Here are a few of the more recent complaints:

Angela of Kill Devil Hills NC (02/06/09)
I purchased my car in 2004 and have had one break down after another. It's has had 2 recalls - 1 engine replaced, engine floading problems, engine crank-no start problems. My car has been in the shop numerous times and after writing letter since 2005, phone calls to Mazda they seem not to want to help me in any shape, form or way.

My car has been at Hall Mazda, Virginia Beach for 2 weeks now. They claim it has lack of power recall again, and said they were waiting to hear from Mazda. The next day engine approved. I was referred to call BBB-Auto Line by Hall Mazda and I recieved a phone call from Katie yesterday telling me they will no longer cover my engine for the fact I called BBB-auto. When engine was replaced in 2007 - it came with 100,000 warranty that I have NOT exceeded and they still refuse to put engine in. I need serious help here. I'm still making payments and I have no vehicle to go to work and back. Thank you,

Jim of Plainfield, IL January 19, 2009

Jim of Plainfield IL (01/19/09)
I owned my 2005 Mazda RX-8 for one year when one cold morning the car would not start. I put the car into the garage thinking it was just too cold when a few hours later it would still not start. I had it towed to the Mazda dealership to have them tell me that it was low on oil and that the engine needed to be replaced. At this point I was like, wow. But if Mazda will replace my engine then whatever. A week later Mazda tells me that they will not honor the factory warranty for the engine due to lack of oil.

I have complained and tried talking to as many people as possible but I have gotten no support from Mazda except for a simple 'No'. I have even had the mechanic at the dealership explain to me that it is possible many other factors could of led to this engine failure and that the low oil is only one possible case. I have researched and found that these cars have a horrible track record for failing/flooding engines and even found a post on your site regarding the recalls of the engines. I'm looking for any help available. The situation of this problem makes no sense for them to not honor the warranty other then to try and get out of spending some money.

Dunham, of Belleville, IL December 30, 2008

Dunham, of Belleville IL (12/30/08)
Approximately 5 months ago I went out to start my Mazda RX8 and it would not turn over. I had not driven it for approximately 2 months as with the price of gasoline it was almost prohibited because of the terrible gas mileage. I had to have my vehicle towed to the dealership to have it repaired at the cost of 700.00 When I got it back the radio would not work and the check engine light came on 2 days later.

After getting the time to return it to the shop, I was told that they would have to put the vehicle on an engine check device which cost arm and a leg, 160.00. I picked up the vehicle later that evening and the light was off but the radio still did not work. The mechanic said that they did not know why it did not, and it seemed to me that they were not any better than some jack leg back yard mechanics.

Once again, approximately 1 week later the check engine light came on again. I took the car back and I was told that I had to have the vehicle checked out with a little hand held device which would cost me another arm and a leg again. The same device that Auto Zone checks it out for free. The same codes came up at both places one free and the one at the car dealership cost was outrageous one again.

The vehicle was given to me by my son as a Father's Day gift 4 years ago and it has less that 40 thousand miles on it. I really appreciated the gester of a great Father's day gift, but believe you me I will never accept another Mazda again. It's cheaper to use one of my other vehicles. If there was a way to get rid of this costly vehicle I surley will. It is a very cute vehicle, but cute does not keep it operating properly.

No economic damage or physical damage occured but it did made me use a lots of four letter words that I haven't used in years
