Suit: Midas 'Lifetime Guarantee' Doesn't Last Long
Midas Faces Bait-and-Switch Charges in California

Gregory of Holly Hill, FL December 22, 2007

Gregory of Holly Hill FL (12/22/07)
I took my 1988 Ford Mustang LX 2.3L Automatic in to Midas because the transmission needed work. They told me it would be about five days and cost about 800.00 to replace the transmission. No big deal. Well, three weeks later, after daily phone calls to the shop to check the status of my car, I finally get it out of the shop. AT A RIDICULOUS PRICE OF 1500 I had to bring it back the next day because the lower seal was not properly installed. No charge for that. For the first three to four weeks, no problems. All of a sudden: no forward gears whatsoever. Mind you, I was still under their 90-Day Warranty. The vehicle had to be towed back to the shop. They tell me that they are not responsible for the car, that I would have to contact their regional office. I asked for the number and was told they don't have a regional office. So I asked fpr corporate's number, and they replied: We don't have a corporate office.

I called up a buddy of mine to get the number online from his home computer. I called and the corporate office told me that in order for them to repair/replace the transmission I would have to come up with half of the cost. I tried contacting the BBB but to no luck. They said it would take them too long to get to it.

I was overcharged, my warranty was basically ignored.

I had a coupon for brakes to be fixed, so I asked them to check my brakes. They called back saying I needed new struts and strut mounts, undercoating, plus my front brakes fixed. If I did not fix the struts it could cause 5000 damage later. So for 1,837.99, they fixed my supposedly bad parts (I am not a mechanic, so I do not know these things) I got charged 200 each for struts and mounts, 189 for undercoating, 300 for brakes and 786.93 for labor. At four hours repair time that comes to 197 per hour. Being worried about the car, I agreed. Which I regret now. This bill seems excessive even if it did need all that work.

He said I could apply for a Midas card with which to cover the payments, but when I picked up my car I had to pay 1,037.99 up front.

I took my car in for a repair to the right front strut which was leaking, a wheel alinement and I also knew it would need a set of tires. The tech checked my car and came back with a 1005.61 estimate for repairs, not including the strut which he said was leaking but wasn't bad. (It was under Midas warranty) But when he told me my wheel bearings were bad I knew he was trying to run up the bill as the bearings had been replaced by a local garage just prior to me going to Midas. When I told him the repair cost was too high for the value of the car, the tech offered to buy my car and said he would repair it for a friend with used parts. I want to know what kind of tech would install used bearings or used struts? I now advise anyone considering Midas to get a second opinion. Everyone can make mistakes, but this just seemed like a set up. By the way, getting the car repaired at the local garage cost 330 not 1005.

Charles of West Islip, NY November 25, 2007

Charles of West Islip NY (11/25/07)
On 9.24.07 I brought my 93' Cadillac to have the muffler checked. I was told that I needed one muffler.  I also asked if they could due a NY State Inspection and was told yes.  To begin, I brought my vehicle in at 0815 hrs. I was told that I only needed one muffler. At approx.1:00 p.m. my vehicle was still not ready and there were only two vehicles ahead of me for a muffler and one vehicle for an inspection. I told the agent that I would have to leave as I have another engagement and that he can notify me when the vehicle is ready. I did not hear from them by 3:00 pm, so I called them. I was told that they cannot complete the inspection because the engine light was on. They also told me that they changed the engine oil because it was dirty.  At no time did I authorize them to change the engine oil and they also charged me 49.95 to do a engine performance check. The cost of the muffler was 317.50, I believe that is extremely high. I had previously emailled consumers resources with my complaint and advised them that I want to speak to a represenative, However, I will be out of the country for 21 days and would they please contact me sometime after November 3, 2007. I have not received any call from anyone. I want to know what my rights are regarding this matter.

Lalla of Sugar Land, TX September 24, 2007

Lalla of Sugar Land TX (09/24/07)
I took my car in to MIDAS when I heard some noise while car was running on 1/2/07. I paid around 1000. I continued to hear a noise, talked to the guys--said nothing was wrong. I took car back on 2/10/07. This time they said it was a different noise and I paid over 900. Later, my brakes started squeaking. I took my car into Midas on 6/30/07 and spent over 350.00,(replaced shoes and pads with VSD, resurfaced rotor and drum, etc)

My brakes continued to squeak, took car in and was told nothing was wrong. The squeaking continued, so I took the car to another Midas shop since it is under warranty (did not tell them it was under warranty until I got estimate). This shop gives me an estimate for new VSD brake pads and new rotors. They tell me that I have Autozone pads and not VSD pads. They also state that the rotors are now below the minimum specs and need to be replaced.
