Neftin Volvo
Camarillo, CA

John of Camarillo, CA, writes:

We purchased our 1995 Volvo GLT wagon at Neftin in 1995.  The first oil change was performed from this dealer (5895 miles).

The next scheduled oil change I decided to have done at Jiffy Lube due to time constraints (Jiffy lube in town and very professional).

Jiffy Lube advised me that they could not remove the oil plug and did not want to do damage by attempting.  They recommended I take back to the dealer.  They also advised me the car was low 3 quarts of oil and they added oil to avoid damage (11038 mile).

I took the car back to Neftin and explained the problem. They informed me that the oil plug been damaged and would replace it but future oil changes need to be completed by the dealer due to the excessive force needed to remove the drain plug.

The service technician informed me that the car needed to be raised on a hydraulic lift and a minimim 18 inch breaker bar used to remove the plug.  This was a ridiculous statement and I let him know that.  They performed the oil change and installed a new plug.  They also told me that a new car would would burn excessive oil (3 quarts in 5200 miles?).

I noticed after the oil change that oil was dripping from my drain plug and returned the car for repair.  They stopped the leak and I assumed everything was ok until the next oil change.  I decided not to hassle with the dealer and changed the oil myself.

I had to combine two wrenches to remove the plug and found two disturbing problems.  The first was a damaged oil drain gasket (copper).  The second was silicon rubber was used to stop the leak.  I installed a new gasket,  removed the silicon rubber and completed the oil change.

I decided to return to the dealer and let them know of their shoddy workmanship.  They denied they had installed the silicon rubber (I brought it along).  I then called North American Volvo with the complaint and they agreed with everything the dealer had to say and recommended I go to another dealer for service if I was not happy. This really upset me as I explained that I purchased this car from Neftin and could not rely on them for service (approx. $30,000 car)

Since that incident,  I have done all possible repairs myself and decided to go to another dealer for service.  I have found with Volvo that I cannot perform brake repair as most other cars and took the car to Ventura Volvo.  They were exceptional and the cost was reasonable.

The final straw was a recent problem with the transmission. The car now has 47,000 miles and I have owned it for 4 years 3 months.  The warranty is 4 years or 50,000 miles.

I had the car towed to Ventura Volvo and they worked along with myself to see if I could get a warranty repair.  North American Volvo refused and the cost was over $600. The reason for refusal was I had not documented my service and did not have a 40,000 mile service completed.

I could understand this if the failure was due to the service but a solenoid had failed and had nothing to do with service. I asked a independent service facility and the dealer and they both agreed that in principle I was right.

One last comment, this last service I asked the dealer to replace a burnt out bulb for my auto shift indicator,  they stated the console had to be removed and normal cost was $80.00, they would perform for $40.00.  My wife and I have decided to do without the light.
