I have a 2003 VW Beetle convertible purchased new. Yesterday (08/31/08) I noticed the adhesive that holds the rear glass window in place has become unattached. Has anyone else had a similar problem with this happening.

I have a 2003 VW Beetle convertible that I purchased with 500 miles in February,2004. Recently, the adhesive that holds the rear glass window in place has become unattached. I took it to National Volkswagen in Jacksonville, NC and they said I would have to get a new one. Otherwise, they suggested that I go to a car upholstery shop. No one in town says it can be reglued, it is no longer under warranty and the dealership insists that I purchase a new top. A new top costs around 2300. I have driven other convertibles and you do not have to buy a new top to save your car. I know that I can not be the only one out there that is or will have this problem. The other troubles that you all have mentioned on this website, I have had also. I really feel that this is unfair of Volkswagen to leave us without any other option for repair. I have had other convertibles and even though the top becomes worn and torn, the car can still be used. Once this glass falls out, I am doomed. Please respond to this post and let me know what you have done to save your cars or if you, too are having this problem. Thank you for your time, Karen

Driving home from a nice visit with a friend in my lime green 1999 Volkswagon Beetle I noticed that my air conditioning wasn't working properly- it kept turning itself off and on. I was pushing the button (AC) vigorously because it was super hot outside and I wanted air. I had been having problems similar to this for a couple weeks but I thought- no biggie.

The last time I pushed the AC button I noticed that the button was wicked hot and then I noticed the littlest hint of smoke seeping from the seems of my dash. I was going through the tubes in Pittsburgh so there was nowhere to pull over so at the first emergency pull off I pulled over. I turned off the car and rolled down the windows and called a couple people to see what I should do. No more than 45 seconds later the smoke is barreling out of my middle console.

I was just on a trip and had my suitcase in the front passenger seat- I didn't grab it- instead I grabbed my purse and iPod and a Hostess apple pie I had just bought (haha) and got myself out of the car. By the time I grabbed what I thought was important and called 9-1-1 the flames were eating my dash and steering wheel. Two minutes later the fire department arrived and the black smoke and smell of burning plastic was radiating throughout the air and my prized possession that I have loved since the day I got it was nothing but a skeleton of burnt rubbish. The fire department put out the flames and opened the hood of the car to reveal a perfect engine and whatever else is under the hood. It was clearly an electrical fire. I was devastated since I had just lost about a thousand dollars in clothes in my suitcase and my transportation.

Aside from this FIRE that resulted in a totaled Beetle I have had MANY problems with this car. Headlights have had to be replaced 4 times each side, almost every lever/controller/light/anything powered by electricity has broken off or has been replaced. My Check Engine light has been on my about half the life of the car leading me to spend mounds of money at the dealership for repairs I didn't really need. Have received 2 recalls on my car- sensors and such. My Beetle recently (last 4 months) has had a hard time deciding which gear it wants to be in between 0-40 mph- leading to a jerky transition between gears and high acceleration when I don't want it to.

Gas door, driver's side window clip, and sunroof have all been problem some. Sunroof leaked very badly in first 3 months of ownership. Driver's side window was stuck down during winter because the clip broke- whatever?! Gas door has been stuck MANY times when I absolutely NEEDED to put gas in the car to keep going- ultimately had to break the clip to ensure I wouldn't be stranded in the future.

The list of problems really does go on for a long time. Obviously this Beetle is for show and fashion and not safety. I have always loved my car even though the problems were numerous. The scariest thing is that the death of this car was due to an electrical fire in the dashboard in the middle of a highway. Please be careful if you plan on buying a VW New Beetle.

Totaled car. Not sure about economic- it just happened yesterday and insurance has not estimated yet. And, obviously personal damage to my ego. I have yet to call VW and tell them about this since this just happened yesterday.

Back window dropped, I need a new regulator, which seems like everyone with a beetle has a problem with. My warranty expired last month, when I had just brought my car in for an airbag sensor light, they said they'd order me the part never did, a month later i get a recall letter in the mail for the airbag light so now they have to fix it, but now my back window regulator failed and my warranty is expired so now im quoted over 600 bucks to make my window work. If my volkswagen dealer didnt suck and fixed my airbag light when they were supposed to maybe they could have caught potential other problems such as the regulator. Also when I shut my drivers side door the window always sounds like its going to shatter into a million pieces, does anyone know why that would be that way? Anyways VW should recall window regulators just like they did the airbag sensor because obviously I'm not the only one with these problems.

Oh, and this all happened during a week of crazy rain storms, vw told me they were gunna keep my car in order to fix it but the part wasnt supposed to be in for 3 days so I asked to take my car for the weekend to get to work. I call three days later and the part isn't in, I call 5 days later and the part isnt in, I'm supposed to move out of state in 2 days and all of this was mentioned to my dealer before he ordered the part that should have been in 5 days ago, so now I'm in a jam.
