Jonathan of Lafayette LA writes (2/1/03):
I am a customer service rep for DTV. I hear day in and day complaints about customers stating "I NEVER ordered these adult pay-per-views..." Oh! Please!! Our sytems let us know what access card the order was purchased, what time, and how (called in, remote, using automated system, etc) ordered. If ordered with the remote, all the information for PPVs is saved onto the customer's own access card.

Nobody but the customer has access to the cards and who orders what on the receiver. The orders are saved onto the card's memory until it is downloaded onto DTv's systems using the reciever's modem.

My question is why do people call in disputing ONLY ADULT pay per view's stating "this is a Christian home" and "we go to church everyday," or "we weren't home at that time." Somebody in that household ordered the movie, and the customer is responsible for all charges. Like I stated previously, the orders are saved onto the memory of the access card. The cust can also look at the "past purchases" on their main menu to look at all the ppvs charged on that reciever. That screen only shows PPVs ordered with the remote control in that home, on that reciever, on that access card -- no one else's.

Please Post. Hopefully, this helps everyone out and minimizes confusion. Maybe it was a son or daughter, or maybe the wife's nephew's neighbor. When charges for adult ppvs come up on the dtv bill, someone in that household DID order the movies. Thank you.

Not so fast there, Jonathan. It's not that easy to get the last word here.

Jim of Eufaula AL writes (2/24/03):
The "customer service" representative is either misinformed or is intentionally misstating the facts in order to discourage similar complaints. We have evidence that DirecTV knows its "access cards" are being routinely hacked. In other words, the access cards that supposedly are "special" to only one individual account are actually hacked and tapped into buy unscrupulous thieves who then sell the access to other unscrupulous buyers. DirecTV is well aware of this.

What else explains an elderly African American women, while at work and no one has access to her house, is supposedly watching nude blond beach cheerleaders, six times in a row? DirecTV knows it, so they try to pressure their customers into paying for a loss they are too inept to prevent.

"T" of Belton SC (2/24/03):
RE: "Jonathan" the rep from DirectV and his comment that the ONLY movies that people protest and say they didn't order are Adult films. I have news for Mr. Jonathan and the Holier than Thou attitude of DirecTV -- this indeed happened to us and it was both adult movies and tamer family-type movies -- one "purchased" when we were on vacation and the house locked tighter than a drum! I am at a loss as to how and why they keep getting away with this. Either there is a huge breach in the remote system that they are unaware of they are totally aware of what is going on.
