Ameritech & Consumer Privacy

Kenneth of St. Louis writes:
Ameritech sent my nosy boss an itemized copy of my personal cell phone bill at his request. (My boss openly admitted it in his reply to a memo I sent him.) I immediately called Ameritech to ask about requesting someone else's phone bill. They sternly warned me that it was illegal. Then I told them that they had already done just that!

Ameritech allegedly conducted an internal investigation for several weeks, then referred all my questions to their Legal Dept. Their attorneys wrote me a letter and, while not admitting guilt, offered me the princely sum of $500 for my "inconvenience" (I declined it.)

My boss called me in and discussed calls I had made on my own time, including very personal calls. He also saw that I had called the EEOC (on my lunch hour and not about my employer) and told me that he was going to "get me" for that. Not long after, I was transferred to a position with virtually no responsibilities, and then laid off when my position was discontinued. As a result, I had to relocate 300 miles away from my family to find suitable employment. Thanks, Ameritech.
