AT&T Wireless Leads In Number Portability Problems

Although AT&T Wireless shares the name of its former parent company, it has long since moved out and started life on its own. But even as an independent company, AT&T Wireless displays many of the same traits that have caused its parent to watch its once-massive customer base ever so steadily erode.

You can't say AT&T is no longer innovative. Whereas most cell phone companies insist their contracts run until the moon has turned to dust, AT&T now waits quietly for some favorable contracts to expire so that it can hit customers with the highest rates imaginable. Don't laugh, it happened to Alina.

A few recent complaints:

Jacqueline of Woodbridge VA (02/28/07)

I discovered after receiving a letter from American Express that my credit line had been reduced 5000 due to negative information on my credit report. I discovered that AT&T, who sold past-due accounts to Palisades Collections Agency in October of 2005 (per Daquan B. at Palisades) has reported, incorrectly, that I have 31.00 outstanding. AT&T has put this information on my report before, I discovered this in 2004 and promptly called AT&T and the collections agency (Collection CO of America) at that time. Neither AT&T nor the collections agency would provide me any information or proof about the balance and their efforts to collect it before sending it to Collection CO of America. I never had an outstanding balance with AT&T, and therefore disputed the information with the credit bureau. I also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau against AT&T about this matter. The matter was settled in September/October 2004. I received a complaint activity report from the BBB (case #22017167) stating that On October 6 2004, an AT&T wireless executive specialist spoke to Ms. DeVito (myself). The specialist resolved the complaint by removing the balance in question and halting further collections actions on this amount. AT&T wireless apologizes for any inconvenience this matter may have caused. I received on September 28, 2004, the results from the dispute with Equifax. The letter states “We have researched the collection account. The results are: This item has been deleted from the credit file.”  As I stated above, the same 31.00 is now back as a collection account on my credit report. I am furious, needless to say. I received a letter from AMEX today explaining that they had denied my request for a credit line increase because of the information on my report. They advised that this matter, again, needs to be resolved and it taken off my current credit report. I am not able to apply for a credit line increase until 90 days after it was decreased.

Kimberly Alston of Granada Hills, CA December 28, 2006

Kimberly of Granada Hills CA (12/28/06)
I am currently leasing a 2004 Audi A4 1.8T. On Sat., December 23, 2006 as I was driving the red oil pressure light came on and was flashing. I wasn't sure why this was happening and checked the manual. There was something in it that indicated the oil fill light would come on first and not to wait for the red oil pressure light to come on before taking action. That yellow oil fill light never came on.

I took it to Pep Boys to have it checked, since it was a Sunday (Christmas Eve) and they were open. While driving to Pep Boys, the check engine light came on as well. They checked the oil and it was fine, but didn't have the equipment to diagnose and Audi. At this point I decided to call the Audi dealership. Since it was a holiday weekend, the dealership wasn't open. I had to wait until Tuesday, December 26, 2006 to call them.

On Tuesday, December 26, 2006 I called the Keyes Audi dealership located at 5700 Van Nuys Blvd., Van Nuys, CA 91401 and spoke with Ornella Mounzer. She had nothing but an attitude when I spoke to her. I told her about the problem to which she replied, Well, if the car hasn't been getting regular oil changes, that could be why the light came on. I was just at the same dealership in July 2006 for regular scheduled maintenance. She suggested that I have the car towed to the dealership today which wasn't possible, because I was at my job in Los Angeles. Later that day at around 5:00 p.m. I called the Roadside Assistance number to have them come pick up the car.

They said it would be about an hour to an hour and a half. I waited almost 2 hours and called Roadside Assistance to let them know. They told me there was a problem with the towing company and they would call another. The second towing company came and took the car and stored it until Wednesday, December 27, 2006. They took it to the Keyes Audi dealership, I assume, because I waited until 12:30 p.m. that day and never received a phone call from the service representative to find out was going on. I called them and was transferred to a voice mailbox where I left a message. I waited until about 2:30 p.m. and still did not receive a phone call.

I called back and finally spoke to a Tony in the service dept. who looked to see if the car was there. It was and he said he would call me back to let me know what was happening. I received a call back from a David at around 3:30 p.m. He basically told me that the car had an oil sludge problem and asked if I took it to a non-Audi service place to have the oil changed. I told him I had not. He then asked, Are you sure you didn't go out of town and have it changed somewhere else? I don't think that was necessary, but I again told him I had not. He said he would try and check with Audi to see if the repairs would be covered or not. He said he would call me back. He never did.

On Thursday, December 28, 2006 at around 10:00 a.m. I called Audi of America to speak to a Customer Relations Advocate for some help. I spoke with Tanya who was very helpful. She said she would call the dealership and try to find out the status of my car. She called me back at work and told me the service dept. at the dealership was trying to get a hold of someone at the factory to see if the repairs would be covered and that they just needed my authorization to start the diagnostic work. I asked her how much that would cost and she said it depends on how serious the damage is, but they would have to open the engine to see. She said it could be very simple or it could mean replacing the entire engine.

At that point I called Keyes Audi and spoke to Tony to get a price on the diagnostic fee. He said he couldn't tell me yet and they were waiting to hear back from the factory. He said he would try to calculate a worse case scenario and call me back. During this whole process I did some research on the internet about this particular model and problem and found that a lot of people have been having this problem. This paragraph is from the National Auto Parts Association (2006) ........ engine oil sludge occurs when old, dirty engine oil thickens and cannot continue to provide correct lubrication. I will be reporting this to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration because when I was speaking to Tanya at Audi of America and I stated that the light came on out of the blue, she said this is a general occurrence.

As I was reading the complaints online, some of the vehicle owners had their engine seize and the car stop while they were on the freeway which is extremely dangerous. I will also not be recommending Audi or VW to anyone who asks me which car they should buy. A few of my friends have been asking and I have nothing but bad news to tell them about my car and experience with VW/Audi.

Kerry of Las Vegas NV (06/05/06)
I purchased a Go Phone 7/26/2003.  I want to unlock the phone so that I can use another service provider.

I have called the company several times.  First they stated they did not have the code to unlock the phone, then they told me they would not provide me with the code because the equipment I bought is more expensive than what I paid for it.

They also did away with the plan I originally started with and that plan was the only one within my budget.
