We are awash in complaints about unpaid Dell rebates. The complaints below represent just a tiny fraction of the megabytes of complaints we've received over the last few years. There is no sign the situation is improving, so buyer beware!
Anyone with a similar complaint should do the following:
- File a complaint with us; complaints to our site often lead to class action lawsuits which penalize offenders and get at least some recompense for consumers.
- File a copy of the complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, which prosecutes violators;
- File a copy of the complaint with your state's attorney general. You can find the address in our Resource Directory.
James of Austin, TX October 22, 2008
James of Austin TX (10/22/08) We purchased a home notebook computer. We received one weeks after they took our order. When we contacted Dell the very next day that it did not work the game required or have the programs, we were told they would send a coupon for 100 off of some of the programs. The coupons never arrived. When we contacted them again, we were told it was beyond the 21 day return policy that we had no recollection of being told about.
We are still without a computer at home. Thomaas of Ford City, PA October 22, 2008
Thomaas of Ford City PA (10/22/08) I purchased a laptop computer for our church, and since we do not have a charge card (the church) I had to purchase it either on my credit card or some other way. The Dell sales rep. said that if I opened a personal expense account with Dell (which required me giving out my SS card no. which I really didn't want to do) that could get a 100.00 off the computer price. Since this for the church I agreed to do this. He told me that whenever I received my bill I would also receive the rebate for 100.00 and would simply send both of them in together when I paid for the computer, this would make my cost for the computer 100. less. I agreed to this.
Now I get my bill and guess what, no rebate. Now after spending a week going back and forth with some foreighner I am told that I am eligable for the rebate (Duh) and I will receive it in 10 - 20 days but am not permitted to use this rebate on the laptop, Oh yes the bill form dell was dated 10-02 and I didn't receive it till 10-11 and it is due 10-28 of course the fee on unpaid balances is somewhere around 20%. Go Figure, I think my next purchase will be from someone who really cares about their customers !
My church is out the 100.00 discount. David of Downingtown, PA October 13, 2008
David of Downingtown PA (10/13/08) We purchased a new Dell laptop over the summer. It came with a Rebate offer of 100.00. When the rebate check came we had a limited time to use it. We bought some accessories for our computers to use up the 100.00. When I looked over the bills that were sent to us I founf they had charged us 10.00 for an Offset a printer - Plant a tree program. No one had ever asked us if we wanted to purchse this or participate in this program.
By the time I was able to call and talk with someone they said that after 21 days no changes can be made to a transaction. I complained that they had never given me this option to buy this program. And because I had never authorized this purchase it was illegal to charge me regardless of when the error was noted or brought to their attention. They said they would pass it along to their consumer affairs department. So far I have heard nothing.
James of Columbia, MD October 9, 2008
James of Columbia MD (10/09/08) On 12-13-2007 I ordered a laptop from Dell. There was a promotional 50 Dell gift card (or Dell dollars) which was promised by the sales rep. After a few months, we had not received the 50 and I called Mr. Hodges and he said that it sometimes takes several months to receive promotional items.
A few days ago (10-8-2008) I emailed Dell about the item and they have no knowledge of the gift card and reply that my purchase order was not involved in the promotion. I received an email form Mr. Hodges indicating that my purchase order number was not elibible for the promotional item. Buyer beware.
Received an apology from Dell. No economic or physical damage resulted, just a very bad taste in my mouth and a determination to never buy from Dell again. Darlene of Foothill Ranch, CA September 23, 2008
Darlene of Foothill Ranch CA (09/23/08) I responded to an offer for a free dell laptop. It took me two hours to fill out all the special offers! The last offer was to get a loan for a car. Now come on, forcing me to buy a car in order to get a 500 computer? I was furious! This was NO OPTION. Either I filled out the loan or I didn't satisfy the requirements. I had to cancel my credit card over this and I will never never get another Dell product again.
It's not fair to treat consumers like this. I have a Dell and would have liked to get another one but now I don't think so. I am a very busy person and I wasted two hours of my life for nothing! Now I have to wait for a new credit card. Please tell me why a reputable company like would resort to such a scam.
