Carla of San Lorenzo CA (02/13/09) On 1/31/09 I purchased an AMEX gift card from Walmart for a gift upon giving it I checked the balance and the automatic voice told me 0.00 was available. I called AMEX gift cards dept and talked to several people before anyone can give me s straight forward answer, I faxed a copy of the card, receipt and my photo id. i called several times after faxing the information they requested and Finally on 2/13/09 I was told by the AMEX rep that they mailed a replacement card but it will take additional 10 business days to receive it.
AMEX totally does not take of their customers, I asked why not send it 1 or 2 day air mail being that the customer is already being inconvenience. I still have not received the card and cannot seem to find a resolution and mot important I am out 100.00. I purchased gift cards from VISA all the time for gifts and never had this problem. I spoke to Walmart and their manager said they receive allot of problems from the AMEX giftcards. Thank you.
Out 100.00 and had to buy another gift worth 100.00 because this was a present. The stress of talking over and over again to people that don't understand the consumers frustration and not able to handled the problem in a timely manner. Steven of Chesapeake, VA February 12, 2009
Steven of Chesapeake VA (02/12/09) My family members and myself each purchased gift cards as Christmas gifts. They were all purchased in each persons name as gifts (330.00 each). When purchased with the understanding that each person would receive a 15.00 gas card even though each party lived at one address. We then received (2) letters from Am Exp that because of the same address they would not honor the 15 gas card rebate.
To me this is a method of taking advantage of the consumer. I suggest to everyone to stay away from any dealings with the American Express Company in any form. If someone does go through with the any type of class action lawsuit please ensure that I am included.

Barbara of Brookfield WI (02/10/09) The American Express Gift Card is nothing but a hassle. I received a 100 gift card and then made a split payment purchase at Best Buy and paid the balance with a credit card. I returned the purchase and Best Buy said that American Express would give me the 100 credit back. After 2 months, I saw no credit or card in the mail, so I called American Express. They needed the gift card number which I do not have. I can see the last 4 digits on the Best Buy receipt, but not the complete number. So I went to Best Buy and they looked up the number. I call American Expres again and they say it is an invalid number.
I am out 100 that American Express has and I don't. Susumu of Mililani, HI February 6, 2009
Susumu of Mililani HI (02/06/09) On the AMEX website it says: While there is valid thru date indicated on the front of the Gift Card, the Available Funds on the Gift Card do not expire but may be reduced by service fees as described in the question above. The valid thru date is simply required to ensure that the Gift Card can be used at Merchants that request and/or require customers to provide a plastic expiration date during the transaction process. You may not use the Gift Card after the valid thru date. If Available Funds remain on the Gift Card after the valid thru date, contact us at the Customer Service Number to obtain a replacement Gift Card or for instructions on how to redeem the Available Funds. We will issue you a replacement Gift Card free of charge if your valid-thru date expires. Subject to applicable law, if you ask us to issue you a check for the amount of any Available Funds remaining on the Gift Card after the valid thru date, we will deduct a check-issuance fee of 10.00 from the check we send you. Before redeeming any Available Funds, we may hold the Available Funds for ten (10) business days after you request a check to ensure that all transactions have posted to our system. We reserve the right to decline to issue a replacement Gift Card.
My gift card was past the 08/08 Valid Thru date. I called Amex and they said it is expired and they won't issue me a replacement. So, what they say is that it doesn't expire is FALSE.
Lost 100 value of card and several hours trying to get through to AMex to talk to someone other than an recording. Karen of North Reading, MA January 31, 2009
Karen of North Reading MA (01/31/09) American Express gift cards imply that you will get your money back if stolen, but you do not. My daughter (12) is a cancer patient and got 2 100 ones from Radiation Oncology at her hospital, where they took up a collection. They were stolen with my purse. I managed to call in the number for one card (partially used), but was told the balance was used and they would send me a replacement card - without any money on it!!!!! The thieves used them immediately, of course.
I got no help from 2 different people who could not speak english well. I asked both what's the point of reporting them stolen if you don't get your money back? No answer. It's a joke - you might as well send cash!!! My daughter is really pissed at having her Christmas gift ripped off. She's been battling cancer for 5 years and doesn't deserve this.
148.99 and was very disappointed little girl who has been fighting cancer for 5 years. Angel of Elk Grove, CA January 31, 2009
