I did a zero percent interest balance transfer in March for 2,400. I also had a small balance at that time. As I make large payments, they apply it to the zero interest first. The bad thing about what they are doing is each month they incease my purchase amount and charge the added inbterst even though I have not mad any purchases. This is fraud. They tell me they can do what they want. How is this possible? this costs me more each month then it should. I am sure they are doing this to many.

Ashley of Denver, CO July 7, 2009

I signed up for a Capital One credit card when they were advertising 0% int on purchases, and balance transfers till April, 2010. When I made my balance transfer (of an enormous amt) I later received a bill from Capital One which now had my int. rate at 13.9. At first I thought this must be a mistake, seeing as how I had talked to 3 different people to VERIFY that this info. was correct (about the 0% on balance transfer). Unfortunately, they told me there was nothing they could do.

One of the "supervisors" informed me that the Capital One people work on commission therefore will say what they need to say. How can a supervisor allow this to go on, and how can Capital One allow their company to do this. I have since spoken with about 5 diff. people to continue getting the run around. I told Capital One to pull their "recorded phone conversations" so they could see that I was told this several times! Another Supervisor told me "they dont do that". Well, I feel they are unethical, and I dont see how they can get away with this. I want to find out how to speak with someone higher than a "supervisor" at the 1800 number listed on the back of the card. This was my very first credit card and now I am seriously screwed!

Jeff of Gastonia, NC July 7, 2009

I am one of the fortunate people that can pay off their credit card every month, and have done so for the last 10 years. I have never been late with a payment as I have an auto-payment set up that pays my balance in full each month. With that in mind, I would like to relate the following: In June 2009, I noticed that my APR was raised from 9.9% (which has been the rate since day 1 with this card) to 17.9%. When I called customer service, they said I was notified by mail early in the year concerning this rate change. I can most assuredly say that this 'notification' never occurred.

With my history of full payments always on time, they decided my interest rate could be reduced to 12.9% for 6 months, at which time I could call back and see what was available. Mind you - this 12.9% is still higher than my 9.9% rate that I'd had since I got this card. While this does not affect me as long as I pay my balance in full each month, it indeed raise my ire that a company can and will treat it's customers in this manner.

As this occurred AFTER the announcement of arbitrary rate increases being prohibited by law in the future, this is nothing but increasing up all the rates, fees, etc. possible before the law goes into effect. The company can offer no good reason for raising *my* APR. With average credit card balances of 2,000-3,000 per month, they make money off the percentage charged the retailers for the use of the credit card. Other than that, they make no money by way of interest, late fees, annual fee, over the limit fees, etc... (Notice how many fees can be in that list!) What a credit card company wants is someone who is willing to pay the minimum balance so they rake in the interest, but they also want that person to continue to pay off their debt without declaring bankruptcy.

With interest rates of 20+% - they should all be charged with USERY. In today's terms - USERY means the charging of unreasonable or relatively high rates of interest. I think it would be great if the government set interest rates in bands based on the amount owed, and limit fees. Have a cap on the interest rate and fees that will allow the individual the chance to actually pay off their debt. Of course, banks won't want that as it will deprive them of their main source of income.

Summer-Leigh of Grand Junction, CO July 7, 2009

I am constantly being harassed by solicitation phone calls from Capital One. I talked to my phone company, Bresnan Communications, and they said I had to block each and every number that Capital One is using. I can only block 12 numbers at a time, and Capital One keeps using different numbers. I am up to 18 numbers I want to block now. When I "unblocked" a Capital One number yesterday in order to add a new one, hoping the old number would just not be used again, within 90 minutes, I had received another junk call from Capital One on the number I just unblocked.

When I call one of the numbers, I just get a recording and get put on hold. I do not have time to talk to someone at each and every number Capital One is using. It would take hours of my time, and I resent that I have to do this. They are invading my home, uninvited and unwelcome. When I got this phone number, in late May when I moved to Colorado, the calls started right away. Short of giving up my home phone number and having to go unlisted and notifying every one of my friends and business contacts, what can I do? I don't even answer my phone anymore.

Dwayne of Tewksbury, MA July 7, 2009

This credit card rate was at 6.99 % and it was increased to 15.9 % even on my past balances I was told all customers have been effected with the increase. I can see future purchases but not on remaining balances. There reason was Economic times. How about that.

Toby of Lubbock, TX July 7, 2009

I have had a credit card with Capital One for a few years now and recently they have handled my account poorly. I quit receiving statemens in April 2008 and I kept sending in payments of 20 a month with old statements. I repeatedly asked them to send me a current statement and all past ones which they finaly did in February of 2009. They have repeatedly tacked on late fees to which I got the ones prior to 2009 reversed. I didn't receive a statement for January, but sent in a payment of 20. The statement for February showed a late fee for January. I sent them a letter showing that I made a payment even though I didn't get a statement.

I didn't receive a statement form March or April. I sent payments for those months too along with a letter requesting them to once again send me statements. I received a May statement with late fees for the past months and they wanted a payment of 110 to which I told them I wasn't going to pay for late fees due to them not sending me a current statement. I also asked them to call me or my wife to talk about this to which no phone call was received.

I received June's statement with another late fee tacked on and a request for a payment of 140 to which I replied the same way and also requested another phone call to which I didn't get. I received July's statement with yet another late fee and a request for a payment of 171. I called and tried to explain to them what was going on and that I wanted all the late fees taken off and I also wanted to close the account. They told me that if I paid the 171 they would take off two of the late fees, but if I closed the account they wouldn't take them off. I told them I wasn't going to pay 171 because I didn't owe that much. They hung up on me.

dave of morrisville, PA July 7, 2009

Received fraudulent charges of 72.21 appear on my credit card from a company that appeared on the bill as A1 member, company is called blazing keywords out of Oren utah. Called that company and they said they would cancel my unauthorized membership, i never applied for, hence fraudlent charges. I called Capital one and due to those charges they said they would have to issue me a new credit card, which they did.

Next statement 6/29 the unauthorized charge of 72.21 is they again. I call and speak to a Aleisha M. and tell her to remove all charges from A1 member that they are fraud. Received some papers from Capital one requesting more info on the fraud case, i fill them out and send them back.

July 6 i get a letter stating that the 72.21 charges are being repplied to my account courtesy of Aleisha M. I call her and again state they are fraud, all A1 member charges are fraud! She says I authorized them and the company has my name if info. I said isn't that the nature of fraud using one's unauthorized info...She doesn't understand plain english no matter how I state it to her.

deanne of encinitas, CA July 7, 2009

I recieved a letter from Capitol One stating that i could either close my account and keep the 8% APR I had or if I chole to keep the account open my APR would go up to 23%!!! I chose to close the account and attempted to put the payments on auto pay so I would not ever be late making a payment as I know the routine! After two attempts I was guaranteed that the account was set up on auto pay this was before the May payment was due. I was out of the country and came back to find the account had gone in less than 30 days into a collection department. when I called in to try to straighten this out I went through 5 different people and after one hour on the phone was told there was nothing they could do and that they had sent a letter saying the auto pay would not begin until the June payment. I NEVER received this supposed letter. These people are simply crooks and need to be stopped!

Catherine of Houston, TX July 7, 2009

First in March 0f 2003 to explain that I need to apply for a deferment so that I could pay for my legal fees in order to ensure my safety from domestic violence. And then in 2004 I called to explain that I got stuck with the debt from what my abusive exhusband had put on my credit card. Ok the judge said shame on me, but I need some assistance while trying to make the five bad debts that I allowed that person to use. Here I am trying to keep my credit in the up an dup while he is enjoying the high life in prision.

December 2008 I called to request a payment plan, and the operator said that I could send in a min. of 50. Then I began to get collection calls, and letters. I called and tried to be heard, but the customer service rep. went in circles only hearing what they wanted. So then I spent hours on the computer and located the legal council for Capital One- whoops they have to have a Executive Response Committee make contact with the consumers. Which they are only up to tricks, I had explained my situation being a domestic violence surivior and living in a women's shelter I also added that this is debt that I had been requesting a settlement. I know what a settlement means but Capital One's committee needs for your to prove up what your talking about and then finds a way to get their money and burn you bad with a Negative Credit Rating of R 9. Huh? Oh no. There should be a R 7 to reflect paymnets.

Zoe of Eastampton, NJ July 7, 2009

In June I received my monthly statement, which indicated that my interest rate was raised from 6.04% to 15.9%. I immediately called Capital One to inquire about the change in interest rate and was informed that Capital One had made the decision to increase interest rates due to the hard economic times. I was also told Capital One sent me notice of the proposed increase in February. I advised the individual who I was speaking to that I never received such notice and would like to know what my options were, given that I would not be able to pay the minimum due at the 15.9% rate. That individual informed me that there were no options and suggested that I was lucky because some customers interest rates went up to 24.9%.

The next day I called Capital One again. I asked to speak to a supervisor. After much deliberation, I was transferred to a supervisor who informed me that I was sent notice in February and my interest rate could not be reduced, but they would put me on a list of customers who are interested in decreased interest rates in the event that the rates did go down.

I called Capital One a third time to request a copy of the notice that was allegedly sent to me in February since I never received it. That request was honored and yesterday, for the first time I saw the notice that was allegedly sent. At NO TIME did any representative from Capital One advise me that, had I seen the notice, I would have been able to close the account and pay off the remaining balance at the current interest rate. Had I received the notice, that is the option I would have taken.

Yesterday, after seeing the notice for th e first time, I called Capital One to advise that I wanted my interest rate reset and the account closed. At first, I was told that I would be transferred to the automated line - I was placed on hold 20 minutes and then instructed that there would be a 10 fee and that I should have my check book ready. Since there was no mention of a fee in the notice, I hung up and called Capital One again.

During the second call I asked to speak to a supervisor. I was transferred to Greg QRG488 who advised me that I could not opt out because the deadline to do so had passed. I advised him that I did not have notice of the option until today and I only want to do what would have had the opportunity to do had I actually received the notice. He indicated that it was impossible.

I asked to speak to his supervisor. He refused stating that nothing could be done and I could not speak to anyone else. I advised him that as a customer, I had a right to speak to his supervisor if I felt he was not treating me satisfactorily. I also advised him that I am considering filing a law suit based on Capital Ones practice of committing usury.

He asked if I was threatening legal action. I said I was and then he agreed to transfer me to Murray IZF410. Murray indicated that my interest rate could not be returned, that the deadline had passed, and that I could not speak to anyone else at Capital One about my concerns. Murray refused to transfer me to anyone above him and instructed me to put my concerns in writing.

I am appalled by the poor customer service that Capital One has exhibited. I have been a loyal customer to Capital One for several years, I have NEVER missed a payment nor have I made a late payment. Yet, that is exactly what I will be forced to do because of Capital One’s unreasonable denial of my request to return my interest rate to 6.04% and close the account. It is the option I would have taken had I received the notice.

Given that I did not receive the notice until yesterday, and that I immediately called Capital One as soon as I learned I could have made this choice, it is only reasonable that I be allowed to do so now. It is appalling that this company can single-handedly destroy so many people's good credit!
