In march 2007 I called Capital One to close my account,I paid over the phone to make sure my account would close. The next month a statement arrives with a credit of 19.60. Why would they credit my credit card that has been closed! They have never sent me a check for the money. Oct. statement arrives out of the blue with a 50 charge from I dont know where. I had cut my card up the day i closed my account. So Capital One's plan to keep my account open I guess. Now every time I call to clear up the mess, I am either told no one can help me until tomorrow at 8 am eastern time or I just get disconnected. Now i must play the e-mail game dosen't sound like fun. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If I don't pay then negative credit marks.

10/1/07 Tried to pay my credit card off in full and after paying the entire amount, I received a statement for interest fees. I was told I was being charged 14.9% per day on the time bewteen the statement and the time the payment was received. It came to 28.79. The amount that was charged interest was different then the amount that was originally owed. (Strange!)

I spoke to 2 different people who said hold on and they would try and get something done about it. I was on hold for over 50 minutes between the 2 calls. No manager ever picked up the phone and the fees still stand. I was told by one of the customer service people that I would be charged a daily rate on the interest charges until that was paid off. So in theory it would never be paid off. I told them I wanted to close the account. I was told I had to pay the amoutn first. I offered to pay it right then over the phone, but was told it was a 15 dollar fee to pay the 28.79 over the phone to close the account. I sent them an electronic check through my bank and I am waiting to see what fees they will come up with next!!

The usual Capitol One experience:  Over limit fee where none should have happened, and the resultant triggering of all the Universal Default problems.  I have worked for nearly 10 years to rebuild my credit (following bankruptcy in 1998). To that end, I literally became obsessive in my managing of accounts.  I'm online MULTIPLE times a day checking and rechecking all my account information.  In these 9+ years, I've never had a negative on my credit--not a single late payment, careful use of credit, every bill (including medical bills) paid timely and in full.  In short, I watch what I'm doing and, as a result, have a perfect record. Capitol One, in one fell swoop, ruined it all. I literally haven't slept in the last three weeks, I am so FUMING FURIOUS at Capitol One.  Worst part of all, I know I will never have anybody batting for me in this matter such as the Congress of this country, and will never be able to undo the damage(even though I've written over six letters thus far, including one to the AG of the state of Virginia). So I've decided my only recourse is to literally start up my own anti-Capitol One website, which is what I'm working on now. If it helps steer even 10 people away from Capitol One, the website will have been entirely worth it.

1. Universal Default triggered 2. Credit besmirched 3. Health greatly worsened (I've been on Disability for several years).

I have been an exellent customer with CapitalOne for nearly 8 years enjoying a fixed 7.99% interest rate. I was never late on a payment and had 25K credit limit. In June 2007, my interest rate was increased to 12.99. When I called and complained, the CSR said there was nothing they could do to restore my 7.99 rate.  I paid off the balance in September 2007 and called to CANCEL the account. The lead Supervisor David was professional and said he would restore my 7.99% if I remained a customer. I repeatedly told him I just wanted to cancel. Finally, he agreed and said he had read a legal statement to me before he would deactivate my account. In the statement, there was mention of membership fees that may be levied to my account. I made it clear to him that I have never paid a membership fee and I wanted to be clear I would not be assessed any of these fees while my account was being deactivated. I also wanted a written statement that they would send the account closure to the credit reporting bureau. Overall, it was not a long and arduous experience as others here have experienced. However, I am in a wait and see mode.

Higher interest rate on account without warning.

Carolyn of Franklinton, NC September 28, 2007

I contacted Capitol One to send me disability papers since I had paid credit protection for two years.  After two phone calls I still had not received any papers.  I called Capitol One and complained, and they said they were going to send the papers.  Instead I received a letter informing me my interest rate was being raised on all 3 cards. I had not been late on any of them. Since I am not working I was making minimum payment on my credit cards. They said I could close the accounts and not be accessed the higher interest rate, and I chose to do that.  Now I have not used my cards since I closed the accounts but continue to pay my bills, but I have a problem. Every month when I get my statement I have been accessed an over-the-limit fee on my cards.  What?  I don't even used the cards. They say it is interest that knocks it into the over-the-limit fee.  So I have to make minimum payment plus interest fees!  Why do they put minimum payment if that is not really what it is. I have filed with BBB to try and get these over-the-limit fees reimbersed and to find out why they never honored my credit protection that I paid for almost 2 years.

I now have to struggle to pay my credit card bills. I am already behind on some bills because I am still waiting to receive my disability benefits. Capitol One is making it impossible for me to pay by adding these over-the-limit fees to my account, and I may end up getting behind, and the worrying is getting worse. I have been diagnosed with manic depression and other serious illnesses.  The stress of dealing with Capitol One does not help my health any.
