Things haven't been going quite as well for Consumerinfo.com since the Federal Trade Commission caught up with them.

Many reports are similar to this one ...

April of Virginia Beach VA (4/19/03):
I was charged the $79.95 for the so called "free credit" report without warning or receiving an email about the upcoming charge. I realized the trial period was coming upon me, but I could not find the internet address for "CIC." I was charged the $79.95 without prior notification of the upcoming charge. It screwed up my bank account and would have made me bounce several checks if I had not caught the charge on my own.

Unfortunately, April's experience is a common one. ConsumerInfo.com is owned by Experian, one of the three major credit reporting agencies in the United States. It in turn is owned by GUS PLC, a giant British retailer who at last report was pleased as punch at Experian's 18 percent increase in North American sales during the first quarter of 2003. A large part of that increase came from ConsumerInfo.com, which GUS Finance Director David Tyler said was one of the company's "best ever acquisitions."

Experian and the other two major credit bureaus are, of course, required to provide a free credit report to anyone who asks for one after being turned down for a credit application based on information in the report. However, as the complaints below illustrate, Experian and its subsidiary are quite skilled at getting money out of consumers who in many cases have little to spare. (More about credit reports).

Pauline of Saltsburg, PA December 31, 2008

Pauline of Saltsburg PA (12/31/08)
I applied for the Triple Advantage Membership, received the membership but was unable to print my reports, they were in some foreign language or something and they told me that my printer was the problem, wrong, I tried other printers but was unable to print the reports, therefore, I cancelled within one day, received acknowledgement the my order number was cancelled. The next thing I know, I get a charge on my credit card from CIC Credit Report for 24.95 on 12/08/08. I had no idea this charge was going to be charged. I have not been able to get in touch with anyone with CIC. Is there anyway that you can help me as I cancelled my membership within one day of trying to get my credit report, which I still do not have. Thank you for your help.

A charge of 24.95 on my credit card which is unacceptable as I cancelled my membership in plenty of time.

Rebecca of Stow, OH December 1, 2008

Rebecca of Stow OH (12/01/08)
I went to their website FreeCreditReport.com to get my free credit report and clicked on the button that said that I do not want to sign up for their services I just want the free credit report. Then I get my credit card bill and their is a charge for 14.95. I called them to ask why they were charging me for something I did not want, they said that in the wording on their website you get a free 7 day trial and YOU have to call in to cancel.

Once again, since I did not want the service in the first place, I was not aware that I had anything to cancel. Then when I talked to CIC, they tried to tell me that since I was paid up until December 13th, I had to call back on December 13th to cancel! Needless to say I am very frustrated and am making a point to tell everyone and anyone who will listen NOT to go to this website.

Every month I'm charged 11.95 from cic credit report. I did sign up for free trial credit report but I must have forgotten to cancel it and now they are charging me. I want this to end! the money is taken out of my checking account.

Debra of Loves Park, IL November 12, 2008

Debra of Loves Park IL (11/12/08)
Im so upset, i dont have 14.95 let alone continuing charges. I went to freecreditreport and was careful not to sign up for credit watch. It stated to cancell by 11/30/08 and today is the 12th. I see a 14.95 charge and intend on calling them and cancelling. I will also have to cancell my bank account and reopen a new one so that these theives cannot take from me anymore.

Furthermore, i intend to contact someone whith the lawsuit and let them know that if enough of america goes after them, maybe they will be put out of business. They have stolen enough money from us. This just infuriates me that you cant even trust a Credit Beurau.

Fear that they will take more and not cancell, and i dont have any money. I have 60 dollars to my name and thats including them taking money that's not thiers. Im so worried.

Edward of Rio Grande, NJ November 10, 2008

Edward of Rio Grande NJ (11/10/08)
I spoke to Chris on Oct. 15th to cancel the membership and refund. It was done. Today, I checked my credit card showing a charge from them again for 14.95. Chris told me that they would not be charging anymore. I told him that I will filed with Consumer Affairs, Better Business Bureau, and the CEO of the company. I am also going dispute the transaction tomorrow with my credit card.

I do not the credit reports anymore or emails from them. I wanted them to stop harrassing me and charging for something I wanted to cancelled in the first place.
