Direct Merchants Bank

This seems to be a bank that has a hard time getting things right and an even harder time responding to its customers' needs. It has no trouble jacking its interest rates and fees skyhigh though.

An Insider's View

Reading all of this might make you wonder just what kind of bank DMB is anyway. Well, it's one of a handful of "credit card banks" -- so-called banks whose primary business is issuing credit cards. A recent class action suit casts a little light on this odd breed.

Here are a few of the more recent complaints:

Jeannie of North East MD (10/11/06)
This bank has been charging me for credit card insurance that I did not sign up for. When I called about it they told me that I had signed up in 1997, that can't be true because this was an inactive card handled by Genius Credit Management from 1995-2000. I had noticed just recently when the balance jumped from 1200 to almost 2000 even though I had been making payments to them. I took over the payments from Genius when the balance wasn't going down.

This was the only card that the balance was actually rising so I thought maybe Genius was not making the payments like they promised. So I started paying them. But if I was late by a day they were constantly calling over and over again. When I questioned them about the balance and the monthly payments keep going up, they told me that they couldn't cancel the insurance or correct the balance. I tried getting the insurance company to verify my signature and to fix the problem, but they wouldn't. I then got a loan and paid them 1500 and sent a paid in full letter stating again that I did not order that insurance. I also put in the letter that if the check was cashed they were accepting payment in full. They cashed it.

That was couple of months ago. And now I am being hounded by their collection people HSBC again. Yesterday I received two phone calls in one day over it. They are calling my work. They were calling my parent's house until I told them to stop calling. My mom had a stroke and getting to the telephone all hours that they were calling was not good.
