Discover

Discover
Balance transfers
Cancellation problems
Delinquent accounts

Discover's always been sort of the third card out, trailing Visa, MasterCard and Amex by a wide margin. But that doesn't mean it lacks the ability to annoy, offend and aggravate its customers.

Lewis of Coldwater, MI October 2, 2009

My ex-wife got the Discover card account in the divorce and it is even in writting in the final papers. Discover is refusing to remove my name from the account. My ex-wife has been playing games and not paying the bill. So that effects my credit. I have called and called discover and got several different answers.

I also wrote them and they responded back saying it was their policy not to take anyones name off of any account. The only way to fix this is to pay off and close the account. I am beyond fed up with this and just want my name off the account. The account is over the limit and the bill does not come to me. My ex-wife is also the primary card holder on the account. Visa and Master card were more then happy to remove my ex-wife from my accounts. I have not been able to refinace my new home due to deliquent payments that my ex-wife has not made.

melinda of clinton, CT October 1, 2009

I have been a Discover Card holder since 1988 and have NEVER missed a payment nor paid late. Due to the faulty mail service in my town, I have not gotten all my bills over the last year or so, and my husband and I have paid late a few times. We had to go to the post office and complain. We looked into suing the postal service, but you're not allowed, by law, to do that. When I called Discover to pay my bill a few days late and asked them to waive the late fee, they basically said, "tough". Today I got a notice that I have "triggered a default APR" because of that one slightly late payment and my balance rate is going to 29% and my purchase rate to 24%. I am so angry that I closed my account, even though it is my oldest account and will probably negatively affect my credit rating. As a former advertising exec and executive legal assistant, I CAN tell you one thing, I will "bad-mouth" Discover every chance I get, to everyone I know, everyone I meet, and everywhere I can online. People who say, "There's no such thing as bad advertising" are totally wrong. Word of mouth advertising continues to be the most effective means- and I will do all I can to smear Discover's name as "consumer unfriendly and uncooperative".

Henry of Glendora, CA October 1, 2009

As with many other postings, my payment due date was changed on my without advance notice, leading me to be late on payment. I was told it was one time change back in June 2009 but it was again changed in September. I believe they did this to kick me out of a promotional APR offer where they were making little profits. I spoke to several account managers and their supervisors to get this fixed. I am told on two separate occasions that my rate will be reinstated, and my finance charges credited back to me. They credit back once, but failed to reinstate my APR. Called and told by another supervisor that he would do it for me, but I found out when next statement came out that it was not reinstated. Needless to say, I received another finance charge. They blame me for not taking action and held me responsible for the last finance charge up until I finally paid off my balance so they could not jerk me around anymore. Don't ever believe what they customer service reps tell you. They lie and record things in your account about what they supposedly did or tell you that never happened. They just hold you hostage by not resolving your problem so they can continue to add on finance charges. I have had it with them. Discover Card will never get my business again. No wonder they are a distant 3rd or 4th in terms of competition with other credit card companies.

Pauline of Layton, UT September 30, 2009

I recently applied on line for a balance transfer from a credit card to a Discover credit card. I was "approved". Today I received my Discover card with a much lower amount than I was "Approved" for! I called Discover & was told that was all they could give me. Then the person I was talking to. kept on & on about buying groceries etc with the new account & getting the rewards etc. She eventually cancelled the card after me telling her @ least 4 times! In my opinion Discover Card falsely advertized!

Janet of Ann Arbor, MI September 29, 2009

As per my fault, I was 2 weeks overdue on my credit card payment with discovery. While having dinner with my husband he receives a call on his cell. The account is in his name. I was never set up on the account for access because the paper they submitted requested our ss# on paper, and we thought it was too risky to mail that in. The only reason I needed access was for phone questions or over the phone payments. So instead, we set up an online account to make online monthly payments and not risk sending our social by mail.

It is my job to make sure all the bills are paid- because he is a surgeon and doesn't have time. So the lady calls, ask why our home phone number doesn't work, we disconected it after 2 years because a) we NEVER use it and b) the only people that call there are marketing people. She says our payment is late, my husband looks at me and asks why- I tell him I forgot about it. No big deal, I'll pay it tomorrow. Then the woman tells us that if we pay it immeadiatly that she will waive our 39 late fee.

So we interup our dinner, make our payment for 3 times the amount as an apology, and guess what? 2 Months later the late fee is still there. I have emailed them, twice. And ofcourse they don't care to respond by anything other than a generic email. I am appalled by their dishonesty. These are people who we entrust with our finances. Our investment in them means they have a job. How dare they be so blatantly dishonest? I am closing our account with them this month. And quite frankly, couldn't be happier about it.

Tom of North Hollywood, CA September 29, 2009

My story or a rough cut of a letter that is truly still a work in progress is below, it is being sent to discover, no more 28% interest, no more debts that last 20 years because they are specially formulated to keep you in debt, based on the companies knowing your payment history that is what you are capable of, and hitting you with fees or an interest rate, to keep you in debt, it is IN DISCOVER CARDS BEST INTEREST FOR YOU TO BE SUFFOCATED WITH DEBT YOUR ENTIRE LIFE, no more!

I am a very dissatisfied customer and will also be submitting this letter with adjustments made per the audience to the Better Business Bureau, City, State and Federal business regulatory commissions, consumer advocacy groups, my local politicians where I first became a Discover card holder, and to the politicians where I currently reside, local, State and Federal. In addition I will wage an all out campaign against Discover Card and their unscrupulous practices via the internet. By any means necessary. I will give Discover Card 7 days from my mailing of this letter to address this situation, I will be willing to negotiate, initially, but in the past when I have battled capitalistic, corrupt institutions like Discover Card I have found they do not work with me until they see the full barrage one motivated consumer can wreak upon their business.

I have held a Discover card for over 9 years; I have 99% of the time paid my bill, in full on time. I have made a lot of money for [their]company. That is over. My credit limit is at roughly 5000, [they] loaned me 5000, how many times I have paid you 5000, for the privilege of that initial loan, and how many more times does Discover Card expect me to pay another, and another 5000 on that initial loan made to me years ago. [They] made [their] money off of me and we are through. I have not even used my card for almost 2 years only made payments and their that debt is unmovable...and not even just the minimum payments, we're talkng 300 dollars here, 500 this month, 150 another month...and the debt stays the same. Discover Card has figured out a way based on consumers average payments, interest rate, credit limit et cetera to keep a consumer constantly and permanently in debt. [They] have consumers agree to changes in contracts, not by signing or even reading (Witnessing) the change but simply by continuing to use their card. So sell a consumer a Credit Card via an awesome 0%, no payments, incentives, cash back, sales pitch, then mail about thirty offers, junk mail, to the consumers house over the next year but one of those envelopes contains addendums to the original contract, like if you miss one payment not only will you be assessed a late fee (Double Jeopardy Punished twice for the same offense), but your interest rate doubles

I will not pay my Discover Card bill, not now, not ever. One more thing...recently I made a payment on my card at Sears. Discover card called me a month latter and said I owed them a 2 payments, and a late fee, and they are going to raise (Double) my interest rate, because that's what they do if you miss one payment...well, this is because they didn't get the payment I made...computer error...people error, don't know yet, it's under investigation

Dennis of Ocean Park, WA September 24, 2009

Because of a recent move from Florida to Washington State I was a little late on payments to a couple credit cards. Visa I had no problem with, but Discover Card was a nightmare, even after I called and explained that I would be a few days late. I explained that I live on a fixed income and would not get military retirement check until first of month. (I had never missed a payment before and usually added extra money to each payment) During about a two week period, the lady who had my account called me every day or two demanding payment or Discovery Card would ruin my credit. I repeatedly explained my situation. At the 1st of Sept I made payment. When I received my next statement there were additional charges. First I was charged 39 for late charges. These late charges put me over my credit limit which then generated an additional 40. When I called to get an understanding, I was literally laughed at and told to pay up. My complaint is the attitudes of people I dealt with. My experience was a total disaster and very degrading.

I admit that I still have a bitter taste in my mouth about the stimulus bill and the fact that all that money was given to the very institutions that already hold the heart of our country in their grips and fly around in their private jets to their various million dollar mansions spending the billion dollar bonuses provided by us consumers who use their service to keep our heads above water. The water they create with all the various ways they charge for using their service. My thought would be to let them go under and when they do, hold to bonus babies responsible with time in prison. Just like the old days and what they did with the other mofia leaders.

Senica of Laguna Hills, CA September 18, 2009

Discover Card Services has demonstrated extremely poor customer service. They transferred my GOOD standing account to a 3rd party attorneys office (Flicker & Associates) whose main purpose is to collect a debt. I received the 1st call from them in June, tried to get it resolved and got the run around. No one could provide me with definite answers, so I left a couple messages for Sharon, the manager and NO ONE called me back. I started receiving calls again just a few days ago. First of all, my account has ALWAYS been in good standing since day one, no late payments, and 99% of the time I make payments more than my minimum due, sometimes making huge payments. Now, when I call Flicker and Associates, I deal with case managers and their floor supervisors, who can't do anything but try to get the full balance due or try to work out a payment plan otherwise, my account will be forwarded to an attorney who will proceed with litigation and then I will be responsible for their fees as well. ABSURD!!! When I call Discover directly, they refuse to speak to me. It's not a matter of money, it's the PRINCIPLE of the matter. They've placed an enormous amount of stress on me and according to Flicker and Associates, the only way out is to do as they say and pay. Discover has down graded me for NO REASON. I am a responsible paying consumer and have the credit history to prove it. Discover has tarnished their name. I'll never refer them to anyone, in fact, I'd advise anyone to stay away.
