Equifax in Trouble Again

Matthew of Bloomington, IN August 30, 2009

Specifically purchased a one time credit report for around 25. Made sure to not sign up for their monthly program, as I did not want or need monthly monitoring. Was done before I moved to check my credit to get an apartment, and my credit was fine. Found out that after two months they had started to charge me 15 a month. To be clear, there was two months of no charges, then suddenly started up, and noticed after the second charge. Also, you can only cancel by calling. Seems unethical, and was looking for a class action suit.

james of maple grove, MN August 21, 2009

I requested on freecreditreport my annual free credit report. Before I could receive my free credit report, I was required to enter my credit card number. This month I noticed a charge of 14.95 on my credit card for my "free' credit report.

Upon inquiry, I was told that I am automatically entered into a subscription service and that I have only 7 days to cancel. This is a SCAM and a FRAUD. I did not request nor do I want this service. This a bogus scam layered over into what is supposed to be a free report. The U.S. Government should fine and liquidate Free Credit Report.

Kim of League City, TX August 11, 2009

I pulled my credit report through freecreditreport.com. A couple of months later a 15.88 charge showed up on my card account from them. I called them and they said that when I pulled my credit I was enrolled in a credit monitoring program that was free for the first couple of months and because I didn't cancel it they started charging me. I didn't even know I was enrolled. This is a scam!

They did not return the 15.88 because they said that I had enrolled online and again told me they had not received a cancellation. I did not know I was enrolled so I did not know I needed to cancel. Luckily I caught it the first month they charged me so I was only out 15.88.

no credit report noyhing still taking money out of account after calling emailing and a personal letter

Megan of Warren, OH August 3, 2009

I had signed up to freecreditreport.com on May 25th, 2009 for the 'free' 7-day trial. The credit card that i had used was for my direct deposit to work, so i knew that i had money on the card. I did not cancel service within the 7-day free trial (that was my own fault and i will admit that i should have known better), and when it came time to charge the card, i did not have enough money on the card for the 14.95 charge, nor did i see any pending charges or attempts to try to charge the account. Fast forward to July 31st. I had not received any charges on my debit card, nor had i received any emails from freecreditreport.com, at this point I had forgotten that my membership did not cancel. On 7/31/09, i had received a charge in the amount of 29.90, for the two months that they were not able to charge the card.

On 8/3/09, I checked my bank's website and I had another charge of 14.95. I called and spoke to a rude rep named Janice. She stated that the company would charge for the months when my card was not able to be charged and that I would not be refunded for any of my charges. She stated that the company would keep trying to charge the card (UP TO 10 TIMES!!!) until they received their money. I do not think that it is right that the company can try to remove money from my bank account for up to 10 times and not notify me that the charges had failed. I also do not think that it is right that my membership had gone unpaid for so long with it not being cancelled, just so that they could get the money for the time frame that i did not use the membership. I will take responsibility for not following through with everything to ensure that my card was not charged, but I will not take responsibility for stupidity from a company.

Jeroldine of Palos Hills, IL July 24, 2009

I was told that there is an online to get your free credit report. Every time I tried it, they always try to get you to accept offer of pay for membership which I do not want or need. I just want copies of my credit report. I do not have a credit card.

Ashley of philadelphia, PA July 20, 2009

i recently found out today that i was being charged for a membership at freecreditreport.com that i never knew i had secondly i also found out that they were charging a debit card i never gave them i talked to 2 representative 1 was a little nasty and blamed it on my bank i called my bank and they said that they dont give out our credit card information so i called back to freecredit and the guy put me hold for the longest then he got back on the line and said his supervisor said that when 1 card expires that they request your new card information to charge that and that should be illegal it should be up to the card holder to give them the new information and i never knew they were charging me for that it just appeared on my statement today so i feel mislead and there's no way this company should be able to still run commercials when it's clearly a scam

P of Memphis, TN July 17, 2009

I went to the site & paid for a credit report on a potential renter. I did not sign up for a 7 day trial membership, evidently that's how they make their money. If you do any business with them you are automatically "signed up" & you have to take action to cancel. I did not realize until my credit card bill arrived that I was being charged. They refused to credit my account the 14.95. They know this is mis-leading because the recording that you are routed to when you call their number specifically references "if you have questions about your credit card bill for the freecreditreport.com charge of 14.95...". This should be stopped & customers that have been duped should be reimbursed. I spoke with Valerie & she said her supervisor's name was Stephanie but she did not want me to talk with her. When I insisted I was placed on hold for a very long time & eventually hung up. I don't think anyone was going to pick up.

Eric of Phoenixville, PA July 14, 2009

was charged a membership fee 14.95 for over 10 months before I realized what was happening. Their emails were blocked by my employer so I did not receive any notification.

Randall of Oxford, MS July 10, 2009

When I applied for a Mortgage Pre-Approval, my lender told me there were a number of negative items on my Credit Report that needed to be cleared up. I went to FreeCreditReport.com because their TV Ads, and company name pursuaded me that I could get my federally-mandated annual free credit report from each of the 3 Credit Bureaus. Instead, the company used my authorization to provide THEMSELVES with my 3 free reports, and provided me only the raw scores - not the actual credit notations which are needed in order to actually improve one's credit. Even after I paid the fee for their "Service", I STILL did not receive the full actual reports (which, remember were MINE to begin with!) The account numbers, essential for protesting or inquiring into a negative credit listing, all had the last four digits x'd-out!

Many credit report companies, American Express, for example, do not file their credit complaints by Name, or Social Security Number, or even by the number on the credit card, but by an arbitrary acount number. Lacking the last four digits of the number, it's impossible to contact the creditor and resolve a complaint - which was the whole point of me seeking my report in the first place! Incensed, I contacted the company to lodge my complaint and cancel my "service". The individual on the other end of the phone asked for the nature of my dissatisfaction, and claimed to have dis-enrolled me.

I subsequently learned that my bank account was STILL being accessed, and 14.95 a month extracted, two months AFTER I canceled! I'm no lawyer, but IF this company's practices are legal, then they must be dancing SO close to the definition of FRAUD as it is possible to do! Be that as it may, their continued drafts from my bank account are outright larceny.
