Susan of Rathdrum, ID, writes (4/12/01):
I bought a bed from Mattress Outlet with an interest-free contract for one year if I paid it off before the year was up. I did pay it off before and then I get this bill in the mail saying I still owe them $159.38 because they said I was late 4 times. So they charged $29.00 for these late times they said. I called them and asked what was going on and they preceded to tell me I had been late 4 times and I told them that was wrong and they said they would send me a copy of the billing. I received copies and they were all exactly two days late and in fact they said one was credited to my account on Sunday and they don't work on Sunday. And there is no mail delivery on Sunday and it just so happens that $29.00 4 times does not add up. I sent a certified letter with copies of their copies and copies of my bank statements showing the days they arrived back at my bank and they weren't any different from the others, and I got copies of my cancelled checks and there is no recipt date stamped on them so I don't know how they can say when they got them. They received my letter on the 11th of March. I called them again from work on the 6th of April because I hadn't heard from them and I talked to a man named Paul and he said we mailed you a letter on the 3rd and I said it took almost a month. So I waited for the letter. I finally received a letter on the 12th of April, that was mailed on the 6th not the 3rd, the day I called them. A funny thing tho, this detailed report they sent me now has all the same late fees credited on a new date. My payments were due the 5th of each month, they said 4 were received on the 7th. But since I told them One was on Sunday they changed all off them to the sixth now, and added a new one this time too, so now there are five.
