What is Netspend?

Netspend offers prepaid cards from Visa and Mastercard. These cards provide the convenience of a debit card without requiring a bank account. The company does not conduct credit checks, and the cards are a useful way to receive paychecks through direct deposit if you do not have a bank account. Direct deposit funds could be available on your card up to two days faster than a paper check.

When you sign up for the Netspend’s mobile app, you can check your account balance, send and receive money on the go, find the nearest reload location and check recent transactions. Netspend also features a rewards program and an interest-earning savings account.

Netspend’s services also let you transfer money from friends’ or family members’ accounts.

How does Netspend work?

Once you’ve signed up for a Netspend prepaid card, you receive your card within seven to 10 business days. There is no credit check, but you must verify your identity — the company limits usage on cards without verified identities.

Netspend sends transaction alerts to your phone so you know when you receive deposits, when transactions go through or get declined and when your balance is getting low. Netspend cards come with zero-liability fraud protection in case someone uses your card fraudulently. You can also enroll in a protection plan that covers overdrafts up to $10.

As long as you have funds in the account, you can use the card at any location that accepts Visa and Mastercard.

How much does Netspend cost?

Netspend does not charge an activation fee. When you load the card and begin using it, the company charges fees to your account. You can choose a monthly reduced rate plan or pay-as-you-go fee structure that charges per transaction.

Netspend charges a monthly rate of $9.95 or $1.50 per transaction. You can save on monthly fees by enrolling in direct deposit. Other fees for Netspend’s services include:

  • ATM withdrawals: $2.50
  • ATM balance inquiries: 50 cents
  • Cash reloads: $3.95
  • Over-the-counter cash withdrawal fee: 2.75% of the total or $4.00, whichever is greater
  • Account-to-account transfers: $4.95 when done by an agent

There are no fees for direct deposit or paper check services if you use Netspend’s mobile app, and bill payment fees vary. If you do not use your card for 90 days, you will be charged a $5.95 inactivity fee.

Normally I would have gave a higher rating but lately they have been giving poor service. I have been with them for over 10 years and I am ready to find myself another card to do my direct deposits and other transactions with. I am highly disappointed with Netspend. Never again will I refer anyone to them.

Veterans stay away.....Paypal Prepaid sold out to Netspend and their parent company. What a fiasco, horrid customer service. Three calls now, have gone straight to Manila with extremely difficult language issues. You would hope a combat veteran of both the Army and the Coast Guard could get some help....3 days, 5 calls and I keep getting the same "you need to go to 7-11 and purchase our Netspend card". I didn't have to do that with Paypal Prepaid. My VA prepaid account had thousands in it and it is gone, like a fart in the wind. They said it is coming without providing tracking or anything else. You'd have to be insane to use this service. What a shame.

Worst experience ever. Started direct deposit with them and got my 1st pay. Next pay comes and I get a text and email saying my deposit was sent back to my employer. Imagine having rent or bills due and you can't pay them because NetSpend decides when or how you get paid. Now I have to wait until the money goes back to my employer then wait for my employer to reissue my pay. (On another debit card of course). In all the years I've had prepaid cards, I've never had a problem until I chose Netspend. I am going back to my US Bank card. NetSpend horrible. Crooks. I will be contacting the BBB, social media and local news station. Bad business. I better have my damn money in a few days!!!

I’ve provided emails to Netspend showing that the merchant said they was gonna refund me and how they did not provide the services that I paid for but yet Netspend is telling me I have to rely on the merchant to refund my money. Well, what did I follow a dispute for because if I felt like they were gonna do what they were supposed to do or what they said they were going to do then I wouldn’t have had to follow a dispute. Every time I contact Customer Service they either hang up on me or they say things like they’re speaking like a bot or how they’re either reading from a computer from responses that’s being given to them so basically what I’m saying they do not help me at all and when I asked to speak to the supervisor, they hang up on me.

Terrible. 2 cards locked out with balances, on one card a strange phone number was added to be notified if I made a payment. This setup with 2FA, indicates NETSPEND ITSELF HAS employees that either leak or active in defrauding their customers. It is impossible to get ahold of Customer Service to combine both cards into a new one or allow me to get into my account to see what was actually changed. I can text BAL and get my balance. This company is really shady. I recharged my card always at the same place, never stored any info on any of my devices. If I cannot even get basic support, how could someone access the account? Something does not add up, signifying an inside fraud problem. Find another company, outsourced support is not secure.

So someone please tell me why this prepaid company is asking for people's medical records to confirm identity??? They are violating HIPAA laws. Wow they are just ripping people off and violating laws.

We do not ask for medical records to confirm identity. We require a Driver's License or Passport with a proof of address dated within the last 30 days such as a utility bill.

I've been a Customer with Netspend (Ace Flare Account & Porte) Since 2017. Well This Past Week They locked 🔒/ Froze my Account & would not let me have Access to my Direct Deposit. When I called and Finally was able to speak to someone in customer service, a Foreign Lady She actually Said to me, "I'm sorry but I can't take the Block off." ? I told her lady what do you mean?!! I requested to speak to her supervisor. She then stated, "You have A negative balance." I said, "No. I do not." So she put me on hold for nearly 30 minutes then the manager stated, "We froze your account because back in 2017 you had a negative balance of 50 $." ? I said What? Which Sounds Absorb to me. And I remember years ago it was fraud done on my account & I've reported it to Netspend. And I went through the process and it was resolved.

What was told to me??? THEY MADE ME AGREE TO GIVING THEM 200$ TO TAKE THE BLOCK / Freeze OFF MY ACCOUNT. WHICH IS FRAUD!?.. I've taken all my money out the Netspend Accounts. And I'm going back To the Credit Union. That was it. Just taking people money. Freeze their accounts without any warning ⚠️ or anything. Don't trust this prepaid Company NETSPEND of any Sorts. They all are Doing this to People Accounts 😤. I also contacted my Attorney too.!!

The packaging states that the card is ready to use. What the packaging fails to state is that it is only ready to use in person. You can't use it to make an online purchase without registering your card online where you have to provide your name, address, phone number, and social security number.

      Hi Melissa,

Netspend is required by federal law, specifically the USA PATRIOT Act, to verify your identity when opening or activating a card account. This process, known as Customer Identification Program (CIP), helps the federal government fight money laundering, terrorism funding, and identity fraud. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

The worst prepaid app to date. I do not recommend using it. They are robbing you 1$-4$ at a time. There is no call center. This app is for drug dealers and scammers not the working class. I been on hold for 90min after the AI operator said 1min. I despise scamming institutions like this. I recommend never using this app.

We are disappointed that you have not enjoyed using our service. The fees that you're describing are disclosed in the terms and conditions that you agreed to when you signed up for the card. We do a few different call centers with agents working hard to answer calls and resolve problems.

We apologize for the automated system telling you it was a 1 minute hold, you must have called right when we opened because that message is based on call volume for the last 10 minutes. Please check your DMs.
