James of Erie, CO, writes:
We closed our Providian account in July of 1999. We received a bill in April 2000 stating that we had a balance because someone charged to our account. We filed the necessary paperwork in the necessary time to dipute the charge. Everytime we call the customer service they tell us they cannot verify anything.

The BIG problem I have is that they have stated that once an account is open it is always active. Anyone with your credit card number can charge to the account. This is total bull! How do I go about forcing them to close my account?

Consequences are economic because having an account that can never be closed opens me up to fraud in one more place. And since the fraud has already occured on the account once since we "closed" it, fraud will continue to happen. My credit rating will be ruined and I will constantly be fighting with them to dispute unauthorized charges.

Providian must honor a legitimate request to close an account and it has only a limited amount of time to do so under federal banking regulations. James needs to send a certified, return-receipt-requested letter to Providian stating that he is the account holder and requesting that the account be closed immediately.
