Providian Settles Class-Action Suits

David of Burleson, TX, writes:
We realized that over $400 of unauthorized credit protection coverage had been charged to our platinum account. We called this to the attention of Providian and were told a credit would immediately be given in that amount. We were left with the clear impression that a payment would not be due in the near future due to the credit adjustment to our account. In fact, my husband said, "We don't have to make a payment any time soon because of the credit adjustment."

Within a couple of weeks we were recieved a letter, (today), stating that our account had been closed and that the only way to reopen it would be to pay the card in full. My husband is very proud of his credit rating. He has excellent credit, any cards he has are platinum, so he did not want a derogatory mark on his credit rating. We called Providian immediately and yes, they said they would credit our account for the unauthorized charges of 400+ -- but that it doesn't show up as a PAYMENT credit, so they closed our account...and are demanding the account balance in full! Baloney! They over charged us for an unauthorized fee!
