Texaco Credit Card & "Budget Travel Club" |
||
|
|
M.K.
of Lancaster, CA, writes: I
received my Texaco Credit Card Billing which should have been $0.00 and
it had a charge for $69.95 for a "Budget Travel Club" that was
never spoken of before. No one ever telemarketed the product, I never
authorized on paper or on the phone. When
I called the 888 number, they seemed to be ready for the calls, because
before I could get out "I never authorized this" the person
who answered asked me if I had ever heard of the travel club. I told him
no I wasn't interested in anything but a credit. He
said, "You get $40 worth of free gas" I
interrupted him and said I don't want your sales pitch, only a
credit. He
said, "You get discounts on hotels." I
interrupted him again and said, "Are you listening to me? I am not
interested in anything but a credit." So
he finally said he would cancel it but it would take 7 to 10 days and
probably not be credited for a "couple of bill rounds."
He gave me the cancellation number. Then
I called Texaco and they are only open Monday through Friday
9-5pm. I
wonder how many unsuspecting Texaco card members are being billed for
this who may have a high balance and not notice this new way of
telemarketing in reverse -- bill you, then when (or if) you notice the
charge and call to complain they try to sell it. I
think Texaco Credit Card division should send out a separate warning to
all their customers advising of this fraud and check their bill. They
should immediately credit the account instead of waiting "a couple
bill rounds." This
is a very common scam and one that no consumer should have to put up
with. To be certain her account is credited, M.K. should send a
certified, return receipt requested letter to the address on her credit
card statement, saying
she did not authorize the travel club charge and refusing to pay
it.
