Debt Collectors Go After Expired Verizon Bills
Afni Complaints

Theresa of Springfield, PA August 9, 2009

I received an alert from my Credit Monitoring company. It stated that a company called AFNI placed me in collections recently. Also, another alert stated that "Anderson FIN Network" recently placed me in collections for over 500. It states that the date the account was opened was May 2009 and that the account was delinquent. However, I did not open any recent accounts nor did I receive any information regarding these two companies. I researched and found that other people have recently encountered the same issue. I am writing to the 3 main Credit Agencies to dispute but something needs to be done quickly!!

I received a "Settlement Offer" from this company supposedly about a phone I had had back in the 1980s. My suspicions were aroused since I had used that phone company long after the alleged number Afni said that I owed on. In other words, if I had owed money in the past, the phone company would have followed up on a new number that I had.

Based on this and from the above letters that I read, Afni must acquire long dead phone numbers and write to people hoping to find someone who may have not paid up their bill in full or who may not recall something long dead. Afni is a scam searching for pigeons. I submit this mainly as a warning to others.

I recieved a collection letter from afni in regard to a Verizon phone which I had disconected in 2003. It was paid in full at the time. Never have I gotten any notice from Verizon that they thought that I still owed them anything. I have not called them. Their letter gives a web address which I will not go to as I suspect it may be loaded with a virus.

Ronnie of Klongsamwa, Thailand July 21, 2009

I received notice from my credit watch that a possibly adverse entry was to my credit report. I checked, it was an entry by Afni Inc. I called Afni Inc. to find out what this was all about. I never received any letter from them concerning and collection effort. I first talked to a lady named Angela, who transfered me to some one named Jason W. He would not give his last name.

I asked for his ID number, which he gave me as 03828. He finally turnee the phone over to his supervisor, Robert B. I finally got out of Mr. B the fact that they were trying to collect for AT&T. I told him I canceled AT&T services way back in 2001. He then stated it was for a cellular phone service and mentioned Cellular One and Cingular. I did have Cellular One service, which I canceled in 2006, Paid in full. After further discussion Mr. B said he would cancel out and not try to collect, and send a letter to me of that affect. I might add, this came up after I told him that I had researched Afni Inc. on the web, and had read dozens of reports about other people's complaints about Afni Inc. A little detail.

This adverse information was posted to my credit report on July 12 2009, it was caught by the credit repoert company Experian on July 16 2009, and an alert waws emailed to me July 17 2009. I made my call at 7:28 A.M. July 20 2009. The very same day, I received another credit alert. This one showed an account opened on May 1 2009 in the name of Anderson Financial Network Bloomington. I never opened an account with them.

How could they arbitrarily enter this in my credit report? And why did it show up the same day I talked to Afni Inc.? The answer of course is that Afni Inc. and Anderson Financial are one and the same. This is an outrage and these people have to be stopped!!

Linda of newport news, VA July 18, 2009

I received a collection letter from afni for a Verizon bill with a phone number in which I never had for 214.00. No explaination was given. Do they even check to see if these are real accounts before they start sending out statements? I never had this account in my name and Verizon has no information on the number. Is this a real company or a scam company trying to get people to pay for accounts that never existed?

Bernie of Land O lakes, FL July 7, 2009

I just received a letter from AFNI Inc about a past due on a Verizon account I do not have. Also, it has an address fro California and an address for Bloomington Illinois. I contacted Verizon and I have no outstnading balance.

Nancy of North Salem, NY July 3, 2009

Afni continues to send me outstanding bills from several cell phone companies I have used in the past. I have called all of them individually and I have a zero balance! According to Afni I owes 919.31 on Nextel alone! This is a scam! Ive tried calling them and they keep insisting I owe when I know I do not! Someone has to stop them!!!

Kim of Salt Lake City, UT June 9, 2009

I received a collections notice for 591.88 for a Qwest account that was not delinquent from 8 years ago. I contacted Qwest to get more information but they said i needed to talk to the collections agency. I asked how i was able to get service if i owed so much money and why no one said anything when i spoke with Qwest several times over the years, the rep stated "we send out one bill and one bill only". This was for a cell phone, I was unhappy with the service and informed qwest i would not be renewing my contract.

6 days before my contract was up they cancelled my account and charged me 200.00 cancellation fee. I paid the 200 after fighting for months over it and now i owe 591.88? AFNI will not speak to me unless i give them all my personal information which i do not want to do. I told them i would not and was told "your funeral". what is that supposed to mean? I tried to speak with Qwest about this but they would not help me and did not care how this reflected on them.

trying to collect debt over 9 years old or older harrassment harrassment excessively

Jason of Berkeley, CA May 26, 2009

I received a collections notice from AFNI, inc. for a T-Mobile account I never had. I immediately became concerned about my credit report and decided to order an all 3-Report to find that AFNI has ruined my credit score and made a major negative impact on my credit. I went from 740 to 676. Something is incredibly wrong with the credit system when a scam collection agency has the right to enter a false claim on your credit report and the credit agency's way of determing if it's yours or not is simply sending a one page questionnaire asking for basic information which anyone can pull off the web to tie me to this collection.

This drives me insane especially when I was just about to apply for a home loan and now can't because of this. If you google AFNI or T-Mobile disputed charges you will receive a windfall of negative information about the tactics this collection uses which is illegal and against the fair credit reporting act. We, the people of the United States need protection from such faulty laws. Collection agency's should not be allowed to report to a credit bureau. This has ruined my credit and affected my credit score in a massively negative way. I feel as if my life is on pause until my name is cleared.
