Company response

Becky of New York NY writes (3/24/03):
Counselor said that I would be charged one month's fee for setup and that's was it. Instead, I was charged 36 dollars a month on top of the setup fee. Also, he promised to reduce my interest changes, get late fees, etc. stopped and none of that happened. And they failed to post two of my payments. Credit did not improve as two payments are not posted. Also, amount owed isn't decreasing as late fees, interest, etc. fails to decrease the debt significantly.

Amy of Lincoln NE (9/25/03):
I had almost $12,500.00 in credit card debt; My husband had just told me he wanted a divorce; so I had fallen behind on payments after losing his income to help with bills and having to pay rent on an apartment. I heard an advertisment for this company to help lower my monthly payments, late fees and other finance charges; which would help me try to stay caught up. I applied on-line, got accepted into the program; my payment was $383.00 per month and to be split between 12-14 accounts.

While on the program I had paid 3 accounts off myself. I was just looking thru my statements tonight and noticed that I had been paying $368.00 (now lower because I paid off 3 accounts) and all but 1 of my accounts had a higher balance than when I started. I thought they were supposed to help?

But the worst thing is that, if I was to go off of the program, the minimum payments to the accounts have grown to a number I could not possible pay to get caught up on my own. I do not know where my money has gone? I should have looked at this earlier.

Mildred of Limerick ME (9/22/03):
Same story. Payment up front plus monthly payments and now late charges. I tried contacting them but the phone numbers are useless. They say you can access your account via the internet but you need a password. I think these people should be shutdown. I can't believe I was so stupid to fall for this outfit but was getting desperate.

We are on Social Security and have no other income. They put us further in debt than we were when we contacted them. After they have your payments the phone number they give you is for a loan consolidation. Big ripoff. I finally took the bull by the horns (a bit late) and went to a local bank to reduce our home mortgage interest rate which was 10.835%. It took us a few months but we finally closed and the refinancing included all the credit card debt. As of 9/26 they will be paid in full and Debscape will be notified by regular mail. Thanks for your time.

Jeri of Belton MO (8/28/02):
This is one of the many "debt consolidation" sites availabe today. I signed up with them over a year ago in hopes of reducing and elminating my credit card debt. I was however misled. Not only are they taking money for their services but I also am now faced with larger credit card debt due to late charges and penalities. So bascially I'm paying them to make my credit card balances go up. I have contacted them numerous times, but have received no satisfaction. They don't tell you that they take a fee until your already enrolled, they don't follow through if you continue receiving late charges and they don't do what they claim they're going to do.

I am now faced with a credit card debt that is almost 2x what it was when i signed up with this consolidation service. I have no idea how I'll ever get my credit card balances back to where they were.
