Frederick of Harker Heights TX (03/15/09)
In January 2008 I was offered an online class from DeVry University. I was told that since I am a DOD contractor in Iraq and also an alumni of that school (I graduated in 1987) I would only have to pay 275 for the class Intro to Game and Simulation Programming. I was also told (and I have this in writing) that I must pay the full tuition prior to taking the class. I accepted the offer and took the class. (I still have all the email to support this)

Approximately 1 year later, I checked my credit report and saw that they had listed me as delinquent for an account of over 800. When I called their Accounts Escalations department I was told that my tuition rate was not accepted because no award letter was granted. I told them that this was the first time I heard anything about some award letter. I reminded them that since they offered me the class for 275, any miscommunications between their departments about some award letter should not be my problem.

I again escalated this to Ms. Lynette W and told her that I was offered this class for 275 and that there was never a mention about the price being contingent on an award letter. Her email back to me said: You may want to contact your academic advisor regarding the price you were quoted, I am unable to assist you with this. (My academic advisor doesn't work there anymore and this should not be my problem anyway) .... I have all emails and paperwork to show DeVry's offer of this class for 275 as well as stating that I must be paid in full prior to the beginning of the class.

My credit profile has been damaged by DeVry and they have sent this to collections.

Devry initially over-charged me 2000. for a single math course and I made that my last class at Devry upon realizing this. At first they promised to refund the overcharged amount but then when months went by and I finished the semester, the writing was on the wall. Later they refused to refund the money.

After leaving Devry they insisted I owed them another 1000.00 over and above the 3750.00 in student financing that they had already received from my loan company, for a single math course. They held my transcript hostage until 2/04/2009 demanding that I pay this 1000. A small claims judge awarded me the 2000. plus 4500. in damages for lost student financing because they held my transcript without cause. I am still working on collecting this money from them and they still refuse to pay despite the court order. This has caused a long delay in my education and damages above and beyond those available with small claims limits. I would love to find an attorney willing to help me file a stronger case in regular civil court.

I signed up for the online course for Jan, 2007. One week after classes started I decided to withdraw from the class. I called DeVry to withdraw and the representative told me that I would be refunded 75% of the tuition. However, I keep getting monthly statements with the full amount on it. I called the representative again and they told me that it would take at least a month to process and that I should ignore the statement. The next thing I know is that I got letters and calls from their collection department demanding the full payment.

After speaking to their collection, I was referred to call their online services department, finance department and NO BODY was able to help me. They keep referring me to eachother, which was ridiculous. At the end, all I could do was leave a message. A month letter, they sent my balance to collection agency! This is absolutely RIDICULOUS!

Do not go to Devry unless you want to be over charged! All they care about is getting money, not the student. When I first signed up with Devry, I decided I wanted to cancel the application process. It took 3 months of me constantly emailing and calling them for me to receive my refund of 50. When I realized I would not be moving out of state after all, I starting inquiring about the BA program again. The representative was very helpful at this point. However, the entire time she did not inform me that I would have to take out a student loan or pay cash. The MGIB does not pay me until the end of the month and Devry collects in the beginning.

Mid January I received a bill for 3,110 from Devry for the 2008 fall semester. I was in shock! I had not even signed up for classes yet and I was already receiving a large, incorrect bill. Of course, I had to waste my time getting the mistake corrected. They signed me up for courses without my knowledge. I later met w/the Financial Aid rep to discuss FA and she told me I would have to get a student loan or pay cash. I was very frustrated because my husband and I are in the process of buying our first home so we cannot take out any loans or pay a large amount of cash in the beginning of the month.

I feel that Devry is unfair to veterans since they will not accept payments at the end of the month when the student is paid from the VA and that I was mislead. I feel that due to this lack of information being given to the student in the beginning of the application process and every one that was involved wasted their time. Now I am on to the next battle, getting my refund of 100. I am uncertain as to why the original application fee was 50 and the second time it was 100. I even complained to the Director and no one cares!

I graduated fron De Vry in 1994 when it was an institute. Lord, I loved that school was always proud of myself for having attended.

In 2005, I went back there to sign on for Electronic Engineering but was offered The technical management course instead. I filled out some of the necessary forms to obtain financial aid knowing fully that I cannot pay 30,000 out of my pocket. Before the the forms were completed the rep called me, gave me a D number and urged me to urgently sign on to the program.

This a trick that they use. After I signed on to the program, I discovered that I will have to obtain the financial aid myself and despite several call to the school for assistance in completing the forms I got no assistance. I also discovered that they offer no facility to do the program. You have to spend a lot of your time down loading materials from all kinds of crazy websites. When I asked for the books they promised me they said none was forthcoming and I had to buy them out of pocket. So, I went to Barnes and Nobles since some of the sites I could not access to do the English part of the course. When my books arrived and I tried to log on I could not gain access.

I then informed one of the tutors that it was not working out for me and expressed my desire to abandoned the venture. She told me to go ahead and sent me a letter accepting my withdrawal. All of the frustrations reported on this page was experienced by me.

The next thing I got was a l;etter in the mail fot 2,571.00. I have been sent to all the collection agencies for recieving nothing of value. No software, no book, no grade, no report, not even a floppy disk. These people are mean and greedy. Its all about money. With that institution, I am finish.
