Dr. Lee Newton, Bay City, MI (9/7/03):
To the wise and ever-insightful think-tank behind the opinions of consumeraffaris.com:

It’s fortunate that websites like this exist, because by doing such a poor job reporting information and by jumping to invalid conclusions you indirectly make yourselves look inferior – even without any help from people like myself.

Pardon me for expecting that such a highly respected, astute, reputable source would check and re-check its facts before presenting them to the general public.

Your section on eye doctors was the most ignorant piece of drivel I’ve ever had the misfortune to read. You obviously know absolutely nothing about optometrists. Allow me to enlighten you. Per the American Optometric Association webpage:

“Optometrists are independent, primary health care providers who examine, diagnose, treat, and manage diseases and disorders of the visual system, the eye, and associated structures as well as diagnose related systemic conditions.”

The treatment of eye conditions medically and ‘ocularly’, as you so eloquently state, is not limited to ophthalmologists. Nor is examining diabetic patients for ocular complications of diabetes or examining patients with a family history of glaucoma. If you would have performed one iota of research on glaucoma, for example, you would have found that family history is but one of many risk factors for developing the disease.

It’s unfortunate that many of your readers have had trouble with some “eyeglass joints”. Hopefully they will eventually ferret out trustworthy and honest doctors and “eyeglass joints” with whom to do business. According to one of your readers “I chose {XYZ eyeglass joint} because it seemed like a ‘cheap place’”. Perhaps this person now knows the cheapest place may not provide the best care. Do not infer that all optometrists provide second-best care or all ‘eyeglass joint’ optometrists are incompetent just because there happen to be a few bad apples, and some of them happen to practice in ‘eyeglass joints’.
