Consumer Complaints

BlueHippo, based in Baltimore, claims to be "the nation's leading direct response merchandise lender," whatever that might be. It advertises heavily through infomercials, always a warning sign.

So what does BlueHippo do? Its Web site says it "helps consumers purchase and finace the products they want and need, inidependent of their credit history." As far as we can tell, it sells plasma TVs, computers and other merchandise through a pay-in-advance credit plan.

To be blunt, it sells stuff to people with bad credit. Its Web site states that customers pay $99 down and make 13 weeks (that's weeks, not months) worth of payments. After that, the merchandise is sent to them and the payments continue until the purchase is finally paid off.

Is this a good deal? Who knows? It's very hard to know what the real cost of the merchandise is, as it's not very clearly disclosed. If it's like most such schemes, the products are priced at full retail and then some, and the fees and interest rates aren't immediately apparent.

On its Web site on March 17, BlueHippo was offering a desktop computer for $99 down and $39.99 per week. It's not immediately apparent how long the payments last but it's quite likely most consumers could find a similar computer for a lot less if they saved their money and paid cash.

But don't take our word for it. Here are some of the BlueHippo customers we've heard from ...

loss of my money and I WANT MY MONEY BACK

Ulices of Sylmar, CA November 11, 2008

Ulices of Sylmar CA (11/11/08)
It first started when I called blue hippo to see if I could get a computer for work. I gave them my bank account iformation and they prceeded to tell me what kind of computer I was going to get. I specfied if my computers hard drive could be upgraded. They never specifed the total amount over phone. I recived a letter stating the amount and the status of the computer. The information about the computer was not what I had specified and the amount for the computer was not reasonable for the type of computer.

I called them back and explained that the computers info was incorrect and that the price was unreasonable. I was unsatisfied with the order and asked for my money back. They promised they would upgrade the computer and send me a new statement. When they sent me the new statement the computer was still not what I had asked for and the amount for it had gone up 2,515 which was about 300 more from what they had orginally stated. So I cancelled the account.

They pulled out 124 from my bank account so I had to put a stop payment on my bank account which cost me 30. I have called blue hippo sevral tines and they have refused to give me a refund and will only give me credit. I no longer trust this company and do not wish to puchase any products from this company. Please help with any information or actions I could take to get my money back.

i just applied for my computer and i recieved my paperwork, so i read everything. i noticed that it said you will recieve your computer after 13 pmts. well it was not explaind to me like that. i was to recieve it after i sign and return my paperwork. i need one now not 3 or mor e months from now. they also told me that once the 99.00 was auto debited from my account they will start the shipment. well the money is taken now i have to wait 13 payments from now. i dont think so. if i had been told this in the first place i would have not exepted this. now i have been trying over and over everyday to cancel out, but its just a stupid recording, and nobody ever comes on. o want to cancel before the first pmts start. i have not signed the paperwork and sent it off yet, and i WILL not. i want to stop this right away. can you help me?

if they take my money and i have to wait for my computer i can loose my job. my job requires it. i cant turn around and pay for 2 computers.
