Consumer Complaints

BlueHippo, based in Baltimore, claims to be "the nation's leading direct response merchandise lender," whatever that might be. It advertises heavily through infomercials, always a warning sign.

So what does BlueHippo do? Its Web site says it "helps consumers purchase and finace the products they want and need, inidependent of their credit history." As far as we can tell, it sells plasma TVs, computers and other merchandise through a pay-in-advance credit plan.

To be blunt, it sells stuff to people with bad credit. Its Web site states that customers pay $99 down and make 13 weeks (that's weeks, not months) worth of payments. After that, the merchandise is sent to them and the payments continue until the purchase is finally paid off.

Is this a good deal? Who knows? It's very hard to know what the real cost of the merchandise is, as it's not very clearly disclosed. If it's like most such schemes, the products are priced at full retail and then some, and the fees and interest rates aren't immediately apparent.

On its Web site on March 17, BlueHippo was offering a desktop computer for $99 down and $39.99 per week. It's not immediately apparent how long the payments last but it's quite likely most consumers could find a similar computer for a lot less if they saved their money and paid cash.

But don't take our word for it. Here are some of the BlueHippo customers we've heard from ...

Artie of Brooklyn, NY November 9, 2008

Artie of Brooklyn NY (11/09/08)
In April of 07, i placed an order with blue hippo for a desktop PC with 17 inch flat monitor plus i was supposed to recieve a free color printer and a 20inch flat scree tv as a gift. all i had to do sign a contract and make consequtive payment of 39.99 on weekly basis. after making my 13th payment i was to recieve the desktop, and after making my last payment i would recieve the rest of the gifts. i told them to take the money out of my account automaticly and so they did.

after making my 13th payment i called the blue hippo and asked them when will i recieve my desktop, they told me it should be shipped out shortly. and i casualy asked about the free gifts and i was informed that i wont be getting them because, i was late on my payment. how can i be late if they take the money them selves? and there are no returned fund or insuficiant funds activity. i was very diaspointed because without those giftes the prices of 2000 didnt justify the desktop. so i canceled the order. i was fully aware of the no refund policy instead i should get store credit of 519.87.

few weeks later i went online and saw a 42 inch plazma tv for about 2k. so i called them and said i want the TV and i want to use my in-store credit towards the price. i was told no problem and they will send me a new contract. i got the cintract but it was different then the PC. unlike the PC that i had to only make 13 consecutive payment before i get it, The TV had to be paid in full. so i never signed a contract and just took my 519 dollar loss and moved on.

the i started noticing withrawls from my checking account by BLUEHIPPO. i called them and i told them i never signed the contract and what they doing is illigal, i want my money back. By this time they have withdrawnan additional 1000.they said they policy is not to return cash. so i figured i cant get my money back and if i cancel i will lose another 1K. so i waited. last payment was deducted on october 7 of 2008. im still waiting for my TV. i called them, and everytime i call they say oh its ready for shipping should get it in 10 business days. and that happens every two weeks.

now the company located in MD and im in brooklyn. So im not really in a position to travel to MD for the hearing of small claims court. but i called th attorney genral of MD and im schedualed for a Phone Arbitration. But i dont kow anything about how to act. does anyone have any suggeastions. and if this doesn't waork can i take the to civil courts and sue them for more the they owe , because they illigaly took money out of my account. i mean it's not just about the money i neexd to justify my travels for the hearing to MD. Thanks for your help guys. all feedback is more ten welcome

About two years ago I too gave BlueHippo the approval to deduct payments from my checking account and received nothing. After several phone calls to BlueHippo and getting hung up on, very lenghthy on hold times and no progress I simply requested for a full refund.

I was told that I would not get my money refunded and my only option was to let BlueHippo start again and deduct payments from my account. Needless to say after receiving nothing physical or verbal over the last couple of years I just want my money back. Help please!

I never rec'vd my computer. They continued to take money from my acct. When I wanted to cancel I was spoken to in a rude manner. Told I was cutting off my nose to spite my face by cancelling. I was told I could not get my money back even though I have upheld my end of the contract.

As of today they have over 1300.00 of my hard earned money and I have nothing. I would very much appreciate being contacted by an attorney.

Dawn of Bronx, NY November 5, 2008

Dawn of Bronx NY (11/05/08)
back in March2008 i was qualified for a computer and i submitted the first couple of payment and the paper work. i was to submitt a couple of payments on a weekly basis. the problem is here it is novermber and they got over a thousand dollars for me and i cannot get in touch with any person on the phone for customer service. i have call at least 2 times and been on hold for 45mins to 1hr, and still no one.

the first time i call back in sept. i receive a person that told me i should be receiving an email in 7days about my shipment. here is it novemeber and i am still waiting for that email. so can someone help me get my computer or my money back. they say you cannot get a refund but store credit? can someone help me? now that i am talking to Lorenzo he says i will be receive my computer very shortly.
