Consumer Complaints

BlueHippo, based in Baltimore, claims to be "the nation's leading direct response merchandise lender," whatever that might be. It advertises heavily through infomercials, always a warning sign.

So what does BlueHippo do? Its Web site says it "helps consumers purchase and finace the products they want and need, inidependent of their credit history." As far as we can tell, it sells plasma TVs, computers and other merchandise through a pay-in-advance credit plan.

To be blunt, it sells stuff to people with bad credit. Its Web site states that customers pay $99 down and make 13 weeks (that's weeks, not months) worth of payments. After that, the merchandise is sent to them and the payments continue until the purchase is finally paid off.

Is this a good deal? Who knows? It's very hard to know what the real cost of the merchandise is, as it's not very clearly disclosed. If it's like most such schemes, the products are priced at full retail and then some, and the fees and interest rates aren't immediately apparent.

On its Web site on March 17, BlueHippo was offering a desktop computer for $99 down and $39.99 per week. It's not immediately apparent how long the payments last but it's quite likely most consumers could find a similar computer for a lot less if they saved their money and paid cash.

But don't take our word for it. Here are some of the BlueHippo customers we've heard from ...

I signed a contract with Blue Hippo in 2006 for a computer. I made all the payments within the year given 8/2007. I received my computer. It took about 3 months to get the extra gift of a television after I called a number of times. It is now one year 3 months and I have not yet received my color printer or 300.00 rebate.

I have made so many phone calls and all I get is the same response. It will take 4 to 6 weeks, but every time I wait a few more weeks, call again and get the same run around. Two months ago I got an email from them saying the exact same thing, but I would see my printer in about 4 to 6 weeks and the rebate will be put into my bank account sooner. It is now all most November and I still hav'nt receiver either on, nor a letter or phone call. I believe I have done all I can with these people. I do have a Mental/Emotional disability and each time I call, I have to wait over 30 minutes listening to their recording and when I do get through, its the same story. I went on their website and had an online conversation with a customer service rep however they the have that speech memorized and uses it no matter what the question. I do have a copy of it and will send it too you. This person also sent me an email stating the same. SORRY FOR THE DELAY your printer and rebate should be shipped within 4 weeks but give us 6 before you call for the statis. I am very frustrated and the excuses they keep giving me is that they have a lot of customers. I told them I am an old customer but not received what I was promised and still I got the same hipe.

I purchased a computer, flat screen tv and a printer on thier layaway plan. They deducted 80.00 every two weeks from my bank account. In april of 2007 I recieved the computer, was not a dell like I ordered, it was a gateway. On dec. 12,2007 I paid bluehippo off[2178.48] bluehippo took an additional 75.64 dollars out of my acc.As of today I have not recieved the flat screen or printer, not even the over payment that they took out of my acc. Or the 300 dollar rebate. I have repeatly tried to work this out. All blue hippo has done is give me one story after another as to why I don't have what I paid for. I have talked to I think every customer service rep there.

Laurie of Stockton CA (10/30/08)
I ordered and paid (on time) for a computer through BlueHippo. I was promised, when paid for, a TV, a printer, and a 900.00 rebate. It was paid in full 5/25/2007. I have been calling them AT LEAST once a month since then and they always say it is on the way. Needless to say, last time I called, they said there was nothing I could do but wait. I asked to talk to the escalation team and they said they had no phones. I have turned them into the Better Business Bureau in California, Nevada and Maryland. I have also turned them into the FTC commission in Nevada and Maryland as well as Channel 3 and Channel 13 TV stations. I still have yet to receive my refund and my printer.

I am still out 900.00 and a printer. I would like them sent to me immediately as I have spent many hours working on this since 5/2007.

My mom and I ordered a computer a YEAR AGO! During the whole year, we have made payments on time. Without fail. We were supposed to recieve the computer after 13 weeks (as promised) and nothing yet. Every time I call they say it'll be another 4 weeks...they have been saying that since January. So after nearly 11 months, I am 2 payments away from paying off the computer that I have NEVER recieved. What do I do? HELP!!!!!

We have very poor credit, and we saw this as an opportunity to help us out. They have taken our money and made us struggle instead.
