Candice of Elon College, NC, writes:
When I got to the bank, I was told the check had to be verified. The teller stated it should not take long. I stood and waited for 15 to 20 minutes and had to go back to work (since I was on a 15-minute break and the bank was down the road from where I worked). I called the bank back to ask why they did not cash the check. This time I spoke with Gail. Gail states she will verify and give me a call back. I gave her my name and phone number and she never called me back. I called another CCB branch, but it was an after hours branch which has different policies than the traditional CCB bank. I gave them my account number typed on the bottom of the check and they state the funds are and were there. They further state there was no reason why the traditional bank (East Blvd) would not have cashed the check. I talked with another CCB branch in Greensboro and another CCB branch in Durham. They both could not understand why the check could not have been cashed. Furthermore, they state it takes 7 to 10 days to verify a check, but if it is a CCB check they can pull up the account number and automatically tell if the check is good or bad and the amount of funds the check was written for. I am frustrated. I have called several CCB bank branches trying to clear up this matter. I feel I have been discrimated against by that particular branch and may hire a lawyer. The check was written out to me and they funds are available they should have cashed that check for me even though I did not have an account. I even asked them to call the company who had written the check in the first place. They would not do it. I am very disappointed, frustrated, and angry. I believe my next step is to call my lawyer. The simplest thing for Candice to do is to deposit the check at the bank where she has her own checking account. Banks are often reluctant to cash checks for large sums if the payee is unknown to them. |
