Citibank's Cards Mysteriously Shut Down

Diane of Lenox MA (02/27/09)
Several months ago, I received what looked like a good deal on a credit card from Citibank, and I sent the attached card to inquire about it back to Citibank. I never heard anything back, but months later, I saw that I had a delinquent account with Citibank on my credit report. Huh? The charges were an annual fee and a late fee, for a total of 56 dollars.

I have called them several times, to no avail. Once when I called the computer was down, once I couldn't understand the man's accent. On the last call, I convinced the man I never received the card, and if I had, I would not have taken it, as it had a high annual fee.

Long story short, they signed me up for a card I didn't own, and charged me an annual fee, and a late fee. It is very annoying that when I told my tale to the customer service person, I was told that they had to first determine if fraud was committed, and if this was determined, they could cancel my account. The only fraud committed by anyone here is by Citibank.

I'm hoping that this delinquent credit card will come off my credit report, and has not to date. Obviously, it lowered my credit score. I have never heard of a credit card that didn't require the owner to activate the card by either calling a number, or by merely using the card. I did neither with this card, as I didn't have one. The real damage is a bad rating on my credit report.

The credit card is CitiFinancial for Ashley Furniture Homestore. I have had the card since 2006 and have not had any problems. I always use the card once a year for a store promotion of no interest no payment for 1 year. I have always paid my balance in full prior to the anniversary date. This year my payment was due on April 14, 2009, but I paid early. I made the payment on February 11, 2009 in the amount of 819. After the payment cleared my bank, I went to Ashley Furniture on Feb. 22 to make another purchase. Well, the card was declined.

The store associate called CitiFinancial and they 1st said there was a block, then they said the card was closed. Of course I was livid, because I had just paid the balance in full and did not understand why. I called CitiFinancial for more information on Feb 23,2009 and they said the card was closed. When I asked why, I spoke with 3 different people and neither could tell me why. The 1st lady I spoke with refused to transfer me to a manager and ended the call without telling me she was going to disconnect the call.

So, I kept calling back and I finally spoke with Mr. H. Faroogy and he informed me that the card was closed and could not tell me why. He then transferred me to his manager. His manager said the card was closed because of my credit history and payment on my account. I informed her that I had never been late on any payment and had just paid the balance in full. She said that they obtained a copy of my credit report also. I did not authorize this and was not aware that they could do this without my consent. She also informed me that the card was closed on February 22, 2009. That was very strange because that was the day I tried to use the card at Ashley Furniture.

I told her it suspicious that I paid the card in full on Feb 11 and the card was closed shortly after I paid - on the day that I tried to use it. She informed me that they have the right to close anyone's card when they felt like it. Those were her exact words. I did not and have not received a letter informing me that my card was closed. I did however, receive a monthly statement letting me know that my balance was paid in full and my credit line is 5,500. I feel that CitiFinancial is definitely practicing illegal business practices, as well as unethical. Even thought they treated me unfairly, I should have atleast been notified prior to going to make a purchase.

I took my 2 kids (8 & 2) to the furniture store and we all were there for about 1.5 hours picking out furniture only to have this happen. The sales associate at Ashley's Furniture had taken my down payment from my debit card prior to swiping my CitiFinancial card. Well, she had to credit my card, but I had to wait 5 days for the credit. Never the less, the embarassment that I felt with everyone in line waiting on me and knowing my card was declined.

I pay my bill always on time and have never had any late payments! I called to check my balance on my card when I got so thrown off because there was 300.00 additional dollars on my account. I had only made a purchase of 50.00 dollars on that entire statement and yet an additional 300.00 gets added to my bill. So looked at at my APR and they had raised it more than 10%! I never got a letter saying that my apr changed or anything. I called and they lowered the apr. I am just so pissed they got bailout money and yet they still do this to people!

To begin with, my husband and I have a credit score of lower 800's...each! We've been customers of Citicards for years and years. Obviously, we NEVER missed a payment. About two months ago...I was checking my balance and found out I owed over 200 for interest. I was shocked! I looked at the APR and it was jacked up to 13.99% when for over 4 years, we've had interest with them for only 2.99%.

When I called, I fought with several different individuals and threatened to close the account and transfer my entire balance to a card that wanted me. Finally, they offered my back my interest and then insulted me by saying they could only support it for a few months. Hmmmmm, I took it and will have it payed off and canceled when the time is up.

I have a credit card account with Citi Cards. I check my balance online every day. Yesterday I noticed a 3.93 charge to Foreign Transaction Fee Finance Charge. I called and was told it was because I had paid a foreign company for some meds I had purchased, and that the fee has been in place for four years.

I bought 131 worth of meds from this same Canadian company in June, 2008---no fee. I bought 698 worth of meds from a New Zealand company in November, 2008---no fee. But now I buy 131 from the Canadian company and am charged a fee. It most definitely has NOT been in place for four years and I don't understand why I am being charged now.

I'm out 3.93, not a big amount but I don't think I should have to pay it.
