Citibank's Cards Mysteriously Shut Down

Giuseppe of New Castle, DE February 14, 2009

Giuseppe of New Castle DE (02/14/09)
Citi card doubled my interest rate from 12% to 25%. They said I can have my old rate back if I let the account close when my card expires. I've never been late and I've always paid more than the minimum due. Then they had the nerve to ask me if I wanted to apply for another card. I just laughed. I won't be putting anymore money in their pocket if I don't have to.

Strapt had to opt out of using the card

Judy of Scandia, MN February 13, 2009

Judy of Scandia MN (02/13/09)
CitiCards sent a notice in Nov. to their individual credit card holders, stating that the interest rate would go from (in my case), 11.9% to 21.07%. They stated that you could decline by Jan. 30th, and when your card expired, the account would be closed and you could continue to pay off at the current (11.9%) rate. I called in my decline, and sent a registered letter, both by Jan 30th. My January statement had included the new 21.07% rate - about doubling my finance charge for the month.

I got a confirmation letter in late Jan., stating they recived my decline. I received my Feb. statement in mid Feb. They put the rate back down to 11.15%, but never credited me for the 50 of over-charge on the Jan. bill for finance charges at the increased rate. I had to call to make that happen. I'm guessing they are gambling that many, if not most of the decliners, won't realize they should have had a credit for January interest, and doesn't plan to do what they should, until asked to do so. Feels like a scam.

Kelly of Petersburg, MI February 12, 2009

Kelly of Petersburg MI (02/12/09)
In January my interest rate on my Citicard credit card was raised from 7.99% to 14.99%. I also called to find out why and was given the option to remain at the 7.99% and have my account closed in May when my card expired. I expressed my displeasure at the situation and was told I could talk to an account specialist. This person agreed to lower my interest rate to 10.24% which I took, but I am still not happy about. He had the nerve to begin by thanking me for being a loyal customer for over 5 years. I told him it was quite a rewards program they give to their good customers.

I have never missed a payment, been late with a payment, or gone over my limit, which they are continually raising. My account has a 30K limit, which is ridiculous in my opinion, but it hurts your credit score to ask them to lower it. Thankfully I had transfered over 17K to my Capital One card right before receiving my January statement. I was offered a rate even lower than the 7.99% I had with Citicard.

I will pay the small Citicard balance off when I receive my income tax refund next week and don't plan to use Citicard again. I can't believe their actions. Instead of trying to help the economy they are trying to make more money off of it, while sitting on the bailout money and trying to purchase new corporate jets.

After just 2 months with the card, I decided to be a good customer and pay off 50% of the card. I needed to then use my card a week later AND IT WAS DECLINED. The payment was out of my bank but Citicards NEVER CLEARED IT despite it being on their books! I called 3 days in a row and they kept saying tomorrow you will have your money - I AM STILL WAITING!

Not being able to by groceries for myself or my children (I am a disabled, single mom!); being declined a 7 breakfast! embarrassing; not being able to pay other bills in a timely manner so I can keep track of my budget. Citibank should pay ME for this!

Anita of West Lafayette, IN February 10, 2009

Anita of West Lafayette IN (02/10/09)
In August I moved from India to the US. I have had a Citibank account for the last about 10 years and moved to an online statement when I moved to India. When I moved back to the US, I requested for statements to be sent to my local address which was never accommodated. I have been paying my statements online as a result. In Nov., due to some reason I could not access my online account. I tried changing my password, I could not. As a result I missed one payment. I then received a call from the customer service reminding me of my payment. He was willing to accept a phone payment but could not furnish me with any information on charges posted to my account. When I asked him to list all the charges, he said he did not have access to my statements. When I asked him how much I owe, he said 2900 and I knew this was incorrect.

I spent 2 hours talking to him over the phone asking him to read every item posted to my account. he could not account for more than 700 of charges. So I refused to pay over phone. I told him that I have problem accessing my online account and to send my statements to my home address. He said he will make a note of it but again it did not happen. I kept trying to access my online account and by fluke, i was able to again and paid my statement online. The payment due was 2400 approx. I closed the account after making the payment.

After closing the account, for the next statement, I was charges a finance charge and then a late payment fee. I called the cust serv and requested that they remove the charges as i did my best to make my payments but it was due to lack of customer service that I have not received statements on time. They took my concern and promised that they will remove all fees. Today I have received a letter stating that As discussed, we are unable to accommodate your request for a credit to your account because credit for the payment, transaction, fee, or finance charge was previously applied to you account.

It is more a matter of ethics than the money. I do not understand how a company can charge me finance charges and late payment on the finance charges after an account is closed. When the account was closed, the balance was zero. How can charges be posted after an account is closed? I have been through unnecessary time talking to customer service reps who are least helpful and Citibank keep charging my account which I have closed. What they say over the phone and what they do are completely different. I am not sure if my conversation with them was recorded but would definitely like to access it to prove how they say one thing and do another.
