Michael of Peoria , IL November 10, 2009 I just received a letter from Citibank, whom I have a credit card with, and they are raising my interest rate from 5.99% to 29.9%! This should be a crime. I have never missed a payment and I have a good credit score. I wrote my congressman but I don't know if anything can be done. Keith of Columbia, SC November 9, 2009 I have been with Citi Bank for over 10 years now and today we get not one, but two, notices for each account we've had with them. One was increasing our APR to 29.99 and the other to 26.99. We've NEVER been late or missed a payment, nor have we ever been close to max'ing out the cards. After two hours on the phone with them, and one was so rude, I had to hang up and call back, I was left with the choices to OPT out and close the account or continue with the current rate. What a crock. They are SOOOOO worried that when the new credit laws take affect in February, they are protecting themselves. It is a business choice to lose some customers over money...I WILL NEVER refer them to anyone and am closing my accounts even though I'll suffer in losing my debt to available credit with them. Unbelievable...even though loyal customers get the shaft...I am boiling over this mess and just want everyone to know this kind of practice is happening with them. My credit is over 750, and they are treating my wife and I like we are unemployed, non-paying customers. The laws should be to protect the consumers who do right and retro back to protect us because they got a jump start at us before the laws took affect. CITI is a HORRIBLE company and lost ALL respect to me. KEITH CLINE...not afraid to put my name. Tammy of Goddard, KS November 9, 2009 I have had a CITI card for the past 8 yrs. Always paying my bill's on time and several times charging a high amount and paying it off in the next 6 months. Today I was sitting down to pay my bills to find that my interest rates has been raised from 5.99 to 14.99 % when we contacted Citi we were told that we received notification in July that this was going to happen. I then stated that we did not receive anything and that we even called to request an increase in our credit line that month to make a substantial purchase. At the time we asked what our current rate was and if our rate would remain the same. The representive told us that we were notified and that there was nothing he could do other than lower our rate to 10.99% for 6 months.. We asked why this was happening when we have always paid on time and never been late. We were told that they were raising the rates to be able to offer credit to other consumer. Johnson of Staten Island, NY November 9, 2009 I've been a long customer of Citicard and have held the Diamond Preferred Rewards Card for at least 6-7 years. I have never made a late payment and I paid my balances in full. Then today, I get a letter from them saying that my APR was being increased to 20.99%. When I call in to complain, the facetious jerk on the other line said that it is because of the current situation that interest rates are going up. He then told me that I could cancel the card if I wanted to, but when I expressed that cancelling my card with that size credit line that is on it would negatively affect my credit score, he said, "well that's your problem". I said, "@%that" and he hung up on me without a single word. Yeah, APR increase shouldnt affect me too much if I pay off my balances, but in all seriousness, to increase my rates, when in the past they had only increased rates for infractions, and then to put consumers in this kind of a bind just so that their rate hikes come in time before the government impositions on the credit card companies is a sneaky, underhanded blow. They take a government bailout, don't increase lending, and then try to further squeeze money out of customers. Suffice it to say, when the economy finishes its turnaround, I'm going to another company to get a card. Trudy of Tigard, OR November 9, 2009 I called Citicard this a.m. and asked for a simple request of lowering my interest rate on my credit card I have had for over 22 years. I was told my account does not qualify for one at this time. I then told them this was my second attempt at lowering my interest rate. She again told me I dd not qualify. I then asked to speak to a manager. The manager told me again my account did not qualify for a lower rate. She did however say she would credit my account 60.00 This is some consolation, but not very much since I have paid a higher interest rate for over 22 years. What happened to helping out a loyal customer. I quess this is too much too ask in this day and age. I was not asking my interest rate to be lowered down to nothing, just wanted some relief. I told the executive secretary that they sure have a racket and there is no compensation for good payment history or staying with a company for so long. I try to keep my balance manageable and within reason, but not to their satisfaction. All they want is more and more money. Julie of Aurora, IL November 9, 2009 i have never missed a payment; they raised my rate to 29.99%, i am trying to pay off my balance, and negotiate favorable terms to be able to do that; all these huge bonuses going to these execs!!! when will it stop! Jeff of Horsham, PA November 9, 2009 As with millions of other accounts, my interest rate suddnely went from 10% to 30%. Over the course of the last 10 months, i have been charge over 4000 in fees, which now represents over half my outstanding balance. When i called them to try to work out a reasonable payment plan, and try to get some fees eliminated, ya know, since they took 50 BILLION in tax payer money, they offered to reduce my principle by 27. TWENTY SEVEN DOLLARS! I was told, since my account is CURRENT, they would not entertain a settlement, that they only do that for very delinqent accounts. So basically, I am being punished for actually paying my bill. Diane of Los Angeles, CA November 8, 2009 Citi chose to triple the interest and payments, then "close" account of mine that was officially closed years ago with a fixed APR for payoff. Melissa asked me to create a payment plan to bring my account current. When I called Citi again, I found out that she had given me misleading information about the monthly amount and had reported this to the credit reporting agencies. I asked for this agreement in writing and my request was refused. A second rep there refused to give me her employee ID number and hung up on me. I'm contributing to your website because I think if enough people know the federal credit laws and rights, refuse to deal with bank agents by phone and demand full disclosure of records, policies and credit laws that they might get a different response than the one they get by phone. To my knowledge as well, if the FTC receives multiple similar complaints, they launch investigations. That, at least, is my recent experience. Charles of El Cajon, CA November 8, 2009 My wife and I have had Citibank based Master Cards, which earn mileage on American Airlines, for nine years. We have never missed, or been late on, a payment in all that time, and pay the balance in full each month on each card. Yesterday in the mail we were informed that our variable APR for purchases will steeply climb to 20.99% and 23.99% respectively on "Gold" and "Platinum" level cards. What are these people thinking? Years of dependable on-time payments deserve this kick in the teeth treatment? I should be in the banking business too, where I pay half of one percent interest on someone's savings, and charge over 20% interest! Highway robbery! I enjoy earning airline miles but their system couldn't cost Citibank anywhere near what they're going to charge me. I think I could do better with a street corner loan shark! Shame on Citibank for valuing the almighty dollar above customer loyalty. I suspect Citibank operates out of South Dakota because there are few if any regulations on banks. It's about time for South Dakota to reign in on what is allowable, so that corporate citizens don't act like mobsters! Citibank and American Airlines are losing my wife and I as customers with this bone-headed move! I hope others will leave them as well, in protest. nita of wallingford, CT November 6, 2009 i paid off my balance in full and kept getting additional late charges for a balance that was never there and they kept ruining my credit. When i paid it off again a 2nd time they refused to close my account. i resulted from a depleted credit score, and lack of respect by cit bank. Report Your Experience
