Why Does College Cost So Much?

Sallie Mae has been harassing me for months. I usually ignor thier calls but when I do answer to try and remedy the situation they are rude and not helpful in the least. Last time I spoke with them, they said they were going to have my tax refund garnished. They told me I needed to pay them 250.00 that very moment to put an additional forberance on my account. I'm pregnant and this is just adding to the stress of not being able to afford to live. I can't afford that. I didn't plan on this happening.

The past two years have been hard. I haven't been working because we made the decision for me to stay home with our baby, who is now 1 year old and I have another one on the way. I work in real estate anyway, so even if I was working I wouldn't be doing well right now. My husband has unfortunatley been in and out of work b/c the automotive industry has been terrible and only getting worse. He is trying to get into a another field now. I filed Bankruptcy last December becasue we had to use credit cards to pay our mortgage, medical bills and my costs for real estate while he was out of work and I was getting no business. They want 300 and something dollars a month, that was the best they could do for me as far as a payment goes. We can hardley make the mortgage payment right now. I don't know what to do anymore.

My Sallie Mae student loans have become financially out-of-control! I currently have three (3) Sallie Mae student loans, which my 71-year old mother had co-signed for me. The initial total amount of these three loans was approximately 33.500.00, but currently has become a financially unmanageable, spiraling up, astronomical amount of 49,500.00. I am currently on SS Disability, and CANNOT make the full monthly payments. I tried to get the life of the loans extended, but Sallie Mae was of NO HELP!

I am trying to make partial forbearance payments, but for each loan Sallie Mae charges an ADDITIONAL 50.00 fee per loan. I am telephoned 10 to 15 times daily, as is my senior citizen mother. My mother is on the brink of having a stroke, and I am SICK to my stomach. Not only are me and my mom being harrassed by Sallie Mae, but I've been bullied and threatened into near homelessness by at least TWO of their representatives. In fact, just TODAY I was told by Josh, from Sallie Mae, that they can GARNISH ALL OF MY SS DISABILITY funds!

I read that the US Supreme Court ruled in 2006 that up to 15% of SS & SSD can be garnished by Sallie Mae, but WHY ARE THE CONSUMER LAWYERS OUT THERE PERMITTING THIS TO STAND? I am literally comfounded by what seems to be GOVERNMENT SANCTIONED SALLIE MAE LOAN SHARKS! CAN'T ANYONE OUT THERE HELP US?

Here's the best part about my student loan... After my husband passed away last year I tried to get a forebarance/deferrment till I got my finances straightened out...no luck. I then offered to pay a lower amt (not much lower) than what was due monthly...no they said. I then filled out direct debit forms to have the monthly payment taken from my back acct - get this they sZid NO!! NO because I had 300 in arreas. Give me a break...NO to direct debit for the monthly amt they wanted...I totally give up and would like to find a lawyer to do a lawsuit or class action suit. They are now threatening my credit even though I wanted to make payment. What do I do know??

I defaulted on my Sallie Mae student loans earlier this year. I was attending a online course and my wife and I encountered financial hardship. I have been unable to work due to a disability and my wife at the time had become pregnant and was put on bed rest for several months. Although at the time we were still attending school when we went to apply for government cash assistance and food stamps Sallie Mae garnished our assistance.

We had to live off of a little over 100 a month and 400 in foodstamps to feed a family of 3. When we investigated why our cash assistance was coming up short we were told that Sallie Mae had garnished it and that we owed them around 2000. After a few months they took over well 3000 of our cash assistance and were still collecting it when we left the program several months ago. We are still having hard times and have decided that we were not recieving the quality of education that we are paying for with these Sallie Mae loans and have since withdrawn from our classes so our family can survive. We recieve 2 or 3 letter daily and until we had our disconnected were getting 8 to 20 calls a day. When I confronted them about harrassment they said that they can do as they please because they are exempt from those harrassment laws.

On one occassion I was even told to sell my home to pay off their loan. I live in a little trailer, and last winter we had to stay in one room cause we could only afford to heat with electricity, we had no water, no gas, no tv, just a phone with local calling so I could get in touch with my wifes doctors and electricity. We endured all of this because Sallie Mae's garnishments. Today were still not much better off but we are barely making ends meet.

Because of Sallie Mae's collection practices we were continuously harrassed. Garnishment on government aid cause us to have to live throughout the winter with no utilities other than electricity and phone. If it wasnt for the local churches we probably wouldnt have made it...

Sallie Mae has added ridiculous charges to my account and will not allow me to pay off my loans within a reasonable interest rate. They have denied me every right to have the ability to pay off my loans. In addition to my high interest rate, My loan which has been split into 4 have been rigged to accumulate more interest than necessary. They are charging me over 500.00 per month. I can't afford this at all in addition to my federal loans. I need help!
