Salmonella: What It Is
More about Food Safety ...

Deborah of Winston Salem, NC February 16, 2007

I purchased the Peter Pan Peanut Butter with the product code 2111 which has just been recalled. After consuming a peanut butter and banana sandwich I became very ill with stomach cramps, diarrhea and vomiting. I thought it was just a stomach virus thinking that there was nothing in a peanut butter and banana sandwich that could make me sick. After the recent FDA news regarding the recall I checked my product code and sure enough it's the on that starts with 2111. Just thought I should report this because I'm sure there are many more people who have gotten sick and have not associated to the peanut butter.

It was lucky for me that I because sick on Friday night and was sick through the weekend but did not miss any work. It just left me weak and not feeling well for about a week.

I purchased and consumed Peter Pan brand peanut butter with the infamous production code beginning with 2111 on the lid. I became ill.

I missed quite a bit of work over a week period, was the sickest I have ever been for a period of 9 days. I incurred medical costs to make a doctor's visit and subsequent prescription medicine costs.

Michael of Ballston Spa, NY February 16, 2007

My son had severe stomach pain and vomiting; was taken to the emergency room on my primary care physician's advice. We are going to take a stool sample for testing. This was the night after eating a peanut butter & jelly sandwich made with Peter Pan Honey Roast Creamy peanut butter, batch number: 21116347002130A, with a Best By date of Jun 13 2008.

Damages: Uncertain at this time; but at minimum 1 day of lost work for myself, the cost of the co-pay for emergency room visit, the cost of the prescription and the stool sample test. At least 1 day of pain and suffering for my son.

Short story: after my wife and nanny suffered through a few days of illness, we thought to check the peanut butter factory code, only to discover it is potentially part of the contaminated stock.

William of Genoa City, WI February 16, 2007

I wrote this with the intent to email it to ConAgra but have not done so yet. To whom it may concern, It seems that I may have a bone to pick with you folks. Sometime before Christmas last year my sister-in-law bought a 6 pound can of Peter Pan peanut butter. The product code on the can begins with 2111. It was bought somewhere in the Carbondale IL area. She brought it along with her to my home in southern Wisconsin to finish her holiday baking as they spend Christmas with us each year. It was opened at my house.

This peanut butter was used in a number of recipes including a no bake peanut butter ball recipe (which I happen to love). I ate a number of these delightful treats over a 2 day period, at which time I got what I thought was the stomach flu. The only difference I noticed was that the cramping and diarrhea were much more severe than I remember with ordinary flu symptoms and the nausea and vomiting involved more retching than I would normally expect. I probably ate more than my share and I don't remember who else may have eaten enough to get really sick, however a few of my sister-in law's young children were also sick and vomiting and that seemed strange to me as they seemed somewhat ok between attacks.

I am a disabled person and my health is never really terrific and I usually run into the flu once or twice a year, but this bout was particularly out of the ordinary and much more painful in the entire digestive tract. And because it was Christmas, I toughed it out till I felt better. Since then, I haven't been able to sit down and finish an entire meal without needing to excuse myself to go have a BM. I have also had diarrhea more often since then.

I realize that mistakes can happen but we as consumers, especially in the USA, should be able to trust our food supplies.

My mother in law is almost 90 yrs old. She ate some peterpan peanut butter a few days later she started saying she couldn't breathe. They took her to the hospital,  they did all kinds of blood tests. She had an infection in her blood and then we find out about salmonella. She is really weak, she was in the hospital for 6 days.

Linda of Lacenter, KY February 15, 2007

I was taken very ill in December 2006. I had a month off work and had to be hospitalized for three days w/severe diareahthat had lasted for ten days. The doctors could not figure out what happened to me. I figured it out today. I have the jar of peanut butter, that starts w/2111. This was an awful experience that has left me frightened about what had happened to me. At least now I know.
