Laverne of Denver, CO February 28, 2008

Laverne of Denver CO (02/28/08)
I am 84 years-old and purchased a Craftmatic bed on May 3, 2007 and was told it would help me sleep better because of my surgery and other physical condition. I had ordered a queen size bed with a firm mattress and was told it would also have heat. The bed delivered has a soft mattress and no heat. I have called the company numerous times with no reply. The mattress has lumps in it and constantly is shifting out of place. Finally about a month later, a man came out to check the bed and told me he would get back to me after consulting with his company. Neither he nor the company has ever got back to me. Today, I had my daughter call and she was told the company is out of business and was referred to another company. The new company has promised to ship a new firm mattress and if we still wanted heat I would have to purchase it separately. We are not holding out breath.

The bed cost 3,535.10 and is financed at 5016.96 at 18% interest. I was not told that the finance interest would be 18%. I have a hard time sleeping in the bed in the present condition and wish I had never bought it. At this time I am having sciatic problems and am sure it is due to the horrible mattress.

I began working for this company a month ago.  Everything all the complaints mention about this company are true.  The fact about staying at the customer's home for 2-3 hours is a small thing on the scale compared to the third-party, high-pressured sales tactics. They lie that they will pay 50 per presentation to the employee and 200 for what they call their sales kit which consists of a DVD of their advertisement that they air on TV.  They burn this DVD themselves, which costs about a quarter.  We must not forget the vibrator that maybe costs 25--and you have to pay for their contracts, otherwise known as their paperwork.  The salesman must also pay for a small gift for the customers.  The salesperson is also to make the customer feel obligated.

I have been taken advantage of for not being paid for the gas too and from Denver for a non-paid training class; I was promised gas reimbursement along with 50.00 per presentation, sale or no sale for the first 90 days of employment.  My first check was 290 which they then deducted 50 for that sales kit, leaving me 240.  I decided to quit, but they said they didn't have to pay me for five presentations. They were also to pay me back for the kit that I returned in person. They gave me bad leads which they said had checked out and were quality with credit checked in advance, but the people's credit was bad.  How can they check people's credit in advance without the person's permission?  They also lie to the customers, telling them they may have won a bed; that is how the salepersons get into the customers homes.  I have been in sales for years and haven't experienced such liars. I haven't time for a company that doesn't care for its customers or their feelings, or for their employees, either.  People need to know that Craftmatic and Contour are the same company.  They care about the dollar and not the customers, who are usually ill.  Too bad I was brainwashed for a couple of weeks. This company has zero integrity and no compassion for their fellow man.

Working for them, I have never cried so much and been so embarrassed.  One customer's daughter is dying at age 18.  Their salesmen told them they can afford to pay 65 per month for their sick daughter even though the mother told him she is now having to use the money to pay for her burial.  I still cry for this mother.

I wrote for information on the Craftmatic bed. They called and promised us each a 500 shopping spree if we'd just listen to the salesman. The salesman showed us a video about the bed and we understood that we had a year to decide whether to keep the bed or not.  We bought two 39 x 80 Deluxe Sleep Systems with adjustable density mattresses on 2/20/07, that also included vibrators and heated mattress pads. They were not delivered until the following Tuesday.

We were disappointed in the beds and felt they were not worth the 5700 we paid for them so I called and asked them to pick them up. I was told that we couldn't cancel because our 5 days was up. We did not even received them within 5 days of the order.

The beds that were delivered were 39 x 74 instead of 39 x 80 but we didn't realize that until the delivery man had left. They offered to exchange, but since they had to come from Denver, we decided to just keep what we had. Naturally when they sent the mattress pads, they sent them according to our order, so we had to return them and get the other size.

The beds don't, and never have, worked correctly with the foot control. Instead of bending at the knee they go straight up. I have called Craftmatic several times, and they keep making excuses and telling me it will take a while for it to work right!

I decided to give them one more call only to find out that Craftmatic is out of business and another company is covering the warranties. They are suppposed to send someone out next week to see about this, but I'll believe it when I see them coming. Also, the shopping spree we were promised was online at www.WAshopping.com. and there is nothing there worth paying the postage on.

I had back surgery done on 1/7/08, and the rep# 8253 made a presentation to me on 1-23-08. He said that can I try out the bed for 5 days and make a decision of whether to keep the bed or return it. Without showing a film, I was in a lot of pain. Jim did not tell me that the bed to try out for 5 days was the trip to get to my house, for the hardware to get to my house--not actually to try it, but to see if it was comfortable. I faxed a letter as instructed to the owner regarding what he had said. I was told that I had to buy the bed because I kept the bed and didn't send it back with the delivery guys. I have told them to come get it, and he said NO! Someone needs to take their business license for false advertising, make them stop making fools out of people and stop lying to the customers.

I had a promise of being comfortable, better leg circulation, and help with the constant back pain.

Craftmatic was contacted online and a request for a repairman was made to repair my bed that I have had for several years. On 1/31/08 Michael from Craftmatic showed up and examined the bed by getting down on the floor and checking  from both sides.

He told me that it was unrepairable and then proceeded to quote me pricing of 2950 for a new bed.  I agreed and a contract was signed. The bed was to be delivered on the 2/9/08.

When the old bed was lifted, it was noted that the only thing wrong was a Missing nut.  This was easily replaced, fixing the bed. Delivery of the new bed was stopped and never taken off the truck.

The deliveryman notified the dispatcher and we got a phone call from the area general manager of Craftmatic who proceeded to tell my daughter that I would have to pay for the bed since I had not canceled the bed within 5 days of signing the contract. She told him the repairman should have fixed it instead of selling me a new bed. He said the person that came to the house was not a repairman but a salesman, and that I should have known that.

The manager said that I would have to pay for the bed or at least a 500 delivery charge. He was very aggressive and belligerent.  I believe the way this entire situation was handled was a misrepresentation on the part of Craftmatic. I contacted them for a repairman.  I was led to believe that a repairman was sent and he said the bed was unable to be repaired.
